Hi all,

I am trying to do a network cdrom Debian install
on a Sager 2200C laptop (P3-1000, 512M ram,
20G hard drive, SIS630 chip set, SIS630 graphics
chip, Toshiba DVD-ROM, and SIS900 ethernet
out the back. I first tried to do an install from an
Ubuntu 6.06 i386 DT cd. That crashed with an
error code 1. Bad dvd player I suspect. I thought
if I could do a minimal install with the Debian net
install, that I could get around that problem. The
Debian net install process went ok but when I try
to fire up the computer after the install completes
I get the following:

savedefault
boot
Uncompressing Linux...

crc error

-- System halted

I am fairly sure the problem is hardware but would
you check the dvd player first or the hard drive?
Any other thoughts?

My next move is probably to take the hd out of the
laptop and put it in another computer and install
Linux that way, then put it back into the laptop and
let it do the plug-and-pray thing to get the correct
hardware drivers installed. I don't want to spend
any money on the laptop if I don't have to.

thanks,
charles.....

Thanks for the reply. I downloaded a diag program for the
hd and it found some bad spots. It said it would try and fix
them (it did) and then I am trying to do a netinstall with the
stable debian. It just booted to the hd for the second step
of the install (configure time zone, etc...) Setting up the
apt sources is a little scarey but it seems to be working. I
still think the dvd drive in the laptop is a little flakey.

later,
charles....
