| Hi Everybody
I have been setting up my linux/debian system the best that I can. I
have the xfree86 running with multiple resolutions. Thanks for the
help.
But I have another question?
I have downloaded packages recommended by debian reference. I have
read info's and howto's and the debian reference. It refers to alot of
stuff I don't understand, being new at this, I try to look in
different places to find the information. It would be nice if I could
print this information when I find it instead of having to write it by
hand.
So, could someone tell me how to set up a printer?
I have a windows computer setup with a dsl modem and a router. The
Linux computer is connected to the router via cat 5 cable. I can
access the internet with the linux computer thru the modem/router. But
I haven't been able to access the printer.
Thanks for your time and effort

What is the printer plugged into? Is it connected to the Windows computer, the Linux computer, or is it a network device connected to the router?

port on the windows computer. The windows computer is plugged into the
lmodem/router. The Linux computer is plugged into the modem/router.The
modem/router has 4 ports.

1) share the Windows printer
2) install CUPS
3) from a web browser, go to localhost:631 and set up the printer.

I went to windows, printers and faxes, it says that it is shared.
I went to debian command line and did lpstat -t, it said the scheduler
is running.
I went to Mozilla, localhost:631, admin, setup printer. There are
several pages and alot of choices, I tried just about everyone of
them. But not the right combination. It says can't find host! Printer
doesn't exist! Need Printer Name! Printer busy, but nothing printed.
This is only what I can remember right now. Any suggestions would be
put to good use.

I am trying to do the exact same thing....I have a printer also on the
windows network, and my newly set up Linux PC on the same router, but I
need to access it....What is CUPS? How do you "install" it?

CUPS is a good print server in apackage calld cupsys in Debian.
What you need is to set up the printer to be shared with other in your
MS Windows XP. Then set up cupsys to use that printer as a
SMB-printer.
Or you can set the printer on a Linux box and install Samba on it.
Then you can share that printer to all MS Windows machines (and also be
abel to share disk from your Linux box to your MS Windows XP).

Well, I spent about a week doing everything everyone suggested. I got
CUPS. I installed it. I installed SAMBA. I installed the Unix print
package in my Windows machine. Here is where I am..
Linux can find my printer on my Windows network. It finds the computer
it is attached to, and it finds the HP 1300 printer. It knows it is
there. I am using a driver for a HP 1200, since I don't see a 1300
listed. I have also tried raw text, and Postscript printer.
It says I have "successfully" installed the printer, and asks if I want
to print a test page. Then, it says that Samba is unable to connect to
the printer. I am out of ideas. What am I missing????????
I thought sure that I had found the answer when I got a suggestion to
install the Unix print services XP network software on the printer
server (computer to which the network printer is attached). That did
not work.
Samba sees the printer, but won't connect. Why?
