<<caution, newbie talk ahead>>

I recently installed sarge, an almost glitchless job.

Then I tried etch on the same machine. Failed. (Done as fresh install,
from scratch)

1) Can't find ethernet card
2) Can't detect hard drive

So, naturally, I don't get it. Both installs successful and failed were
netinstalls.

The hard drives (2) are old SCSI, Seagates. The box did service for a
few years as a server.
SEAGATE ST318437LW
Initio Ultra SCS Host Adapter (2X)

The ethernet card adapter is:
D-Link DFE-530TX PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (rev.A)

BIOS Award Software 6.00PG (08/02/01)
PIII/933

What's a next logical step? Appreciate any input.

Have you tried reading installation documents?
Have you tried F2-F6 when you boot from CD? There is some help to get
past some hardware problems like you have. Might have some answers
there.

File a bug report? Give output from "lspci" from the earlier
installation will help those with some clue to help out.

Good luck.

Thanks, I'll try some of your probes and report back. Yes, I've read
the installation docs, which for the most part guided me through the
successful installation, but didn't seem to help me get past the failed
installation.

I do not know why etch fails to install for you, but one way out of your
problem is :

1. Install sarge (which works for you).
2. Edit /etc/apt/sources.list to change sarge/stable to etch/testing.
3. Run apt-get dist-upgrade as root.

You now have a working etch system.

Thanks Geico, I'll give this a shot.
