Author newbie: check if php is installed

dear debain gurus,
i just installed php5 on a debian40 box where apache is already
installed with the following command:

$ apt-get install php5 php5-cgi php5-cli php5-gd php5-mysql libapache2-
mod-php5

/user/bin/php exists

how can i check if php is installed correctly ? how can i verify the
version ?

Type in a terminal: php -v
>
