Will GRUB on Debian 4.0 or FC7 dual boot WinXP?
|

| Hi all,
I saw recently an installation of Ubuntu 7.04 in PC with exisitng WIN
XP in which GRUB installed on the MBR recognised the existing WIN XP
OS and dual booting was going on smoothly.
This was one of the reasons I did not venture to install Linux on my
friends' machines which had WIN XP though they wnated to try out
linux.
My question is, whether the GRUB bootloader of the DEBIAN 4.0 DVD's
supplied with LFY of AUG'07 or the FC7 (JUL 07) does also recognise
WIN XP and dual boot ?
Has any of the list members done it ? If you give me a confident yes,
a minimum of 6 friends are waiting on whose machines I will install
Debian 4.0 over the weekend.
Pl give some leads.

Yes, the Debian installer will recognise Win* and install GRUB in the MBR
so you can dual boot.

Yup, works great. I did this with my thinkpad which already had XP on
it (and a FAT recovery partition). Grub just worked, no messing about
required.
Dodgy.

Also run the XP defrag first. And I've found that XP on large drives
places its unmovable swap partition in such a way as to require you to
devote at least 24 Gb to XP :-(

yes, many times, as I install several Mepis, Fedora Core, and Ubuntu
distros monthly.
But, each and every time, I ask why. This is to see if the user
comprehends enough for me to do the work.
Also, many computers do have tons of drive space, so it is no problem.
If it is your first time, you really should have an experienced Linux
guru nearby or supervising. Just to avoid any simple errors.
Perhaps you could practice on a spare unit? When I have more than a
couple installs, we have an installfest, and all work/learn it together.
