XFCE default browser I/O error
|
|
| Tony Peardon 2007-10-24, 7:14 am |
| I switched to using the XFCE desktop environment because I heard it was
faster, and now when I click on a web browser icon, or when another
application tries to open a page in the default web browser, I get
ERROR:
Failed to execute default Web Browser.
Input/output error.
How do I fix this?

Anyway, it's *probably* disk-related. If you've not shut down that computer
since that was reported, then the kernel log may contain some relevant
information:
$ dmesg
Otherwise you (as root) will have to look in /var/log/kern.log or
/var/log/syslog or one of the backup files (kern.log.1, kern.log.2.gz etc.;
similarly for syslog; use zless since that'll cope with gzipped files as well
as uncompressed files without any extra configuration).

Open up an X terminal and try to start www-browser and see what happens.

menu button:
applications, settings, preferred applications:
firefox e.g.
I do not know if it works, but you can try
otherwise: install firefox?

Are you using FireFox or Iceweasel? FF is not the default browser now.
You should bet this if the link is correct (Debian Etch):
ls /usr/bin/firefox -l
(next line is wrapped)
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 2007-09-16 18:08 /usr/bin/firefox
-> ../lib/iceweasel/iceweasel

I've got many different browsers installed, including iceweasel, but I
mainly use iceape. All the browsers that I have do work, it's just that
I don't seem to have a default browser. I've tried selecting several
different browsers in preferred applications, but it seems to make no
difference.
When I installed XFCE, I also uninstalled a couple of browsers and
installed a couple of others at the same time. Could I have somehow
made my computer choke? Do you think it might help if I reinstall XFCE?
