I have Debian running as I want it on hda1...I am also doing a fresh
install on hdb2...Is there a way I can replicate the hda1 system so I
have two identical systems

I think I phrased my query wrongly....I want to tell synaptic or apt
or aptitude to install all the stuff I have on hda1to hdb2. Is there an
easy way to do this ?

man dpkg and look for --get-selections --set-selections there

You may still have not given enough information to know for sure what you
want. You said identical and as poster Dan wrote, "dd" could give you
that. You could "cp" (preserving permissions) and you could "rsync" among
all the other backup and restore options. Poster Gregor told you a way to
get all the same programs on two different installations (however, it will
not necessarily configure them the same if you have made changes to the
first one.
So, can you be more specific about what you want to do?
As this current question stands, I would have to say, no, the package
managers are not designed to clone a drive. Clone a drive might be a good
topic for a search engine. And reading the man pages for the commands
mentioned might help too.
