Hi,

I just upgraded my debian to 3.1r5 (standard binary release). I
md5sum'd the CDs twice. Aptitude didn't install telnet correctly, but
I got it working (I'm trying to figure this out in a separate news
thread). On to my new problems...

First problem: I installed the lirc source modules deb file. At
first, I tried to build from the source, but I get a configure error
(yet another news thread trying to figure that out), so I thought I'd
use the older deb package. The Readme file from the package
referenced debconf, so I installed it. Doing a man on it didn't help
me at all, but it referred to debconf in section 7. There is no
debconf in section 7. . I'm going to wing it and try to get it to
build/install, but my hopes aren't high.

Second problem: I tried to run aptitude from telnet. I get the
following error:

gumby:/home/jim/installs/lirc-0.7.3pre1# aptitude
Error opening terminal: vt320.
gumby:/home/jim/installs/lirc-0.7.3pre1#

Now, this isn't all that bad. It just means I have to walk into the
other room where the terminal is when I need to install packages.

Third problem: Every now and then I get the following error when the
cdrom is accessed with aptitude:
hdc: media error (bad sector): status=0x51...end_request: I/O
error....I can hear the cdrom spin up and down as it tries over and
over to access it.

The first time it happened, I used hdparm to disable read-ahead. I
then did an md5sum of the CD (passed). Aptitude worked fine. The
next day, same problem, so I disabled read-ahead. Problem still
there. So, a did an md5sum of the CD (passed). The problem went
away. So, it appears doing an md5sum gets aptitude to work
correctly. Weird.

Any ideas?

Thanks much,

Jim

The second problem is solved. It needed the developer's library for
ncurses. Now why didn't I think of that?

Ummmm, perhaps this explains it:

Yep.

Dan,

Are you making fun of my win98? Yeah, I get a lot of flack from
my friends/office mates!

So why do you use it? Do you even use Linux/Debian? It would appear that
you do not. Wake up.

Hey!
Be nice to the guy. You don't know his set up and needs with the
computers. He has not done anything to get this from you!
If he would complain about bad security etc. Now that would be
another thing.

Hmmm. Ok, now I understand...

Dan C. is not nice. He is a troll. Please ignore him.

Whatever. You're as clueless as he is.

I doubt it, but this explains a lot about you:

Thanks for the warning.
Yes, I can see that, from his "answers". Anyway, should tell those who
doesn't know about him to ignore.
He seems clueless, and it looks like he realy needs a real life.

(Ignoring Dan C....)

The first problem is solved. Since installing the ncurses developer's
lib package solved so many other weird issues I was having, I tried
using configure again with the lirc sources. Everything's A-OK.

Btw, I use win98 on one PC and Debian Linux on another (mp3 server).
I run win98 simply because it does what I need it to do--web browse,
email, develop Windoze programs with VC++ 6.0. No reason (yet) to
upgrade hw & os.

Thanks everyone!
