No major problems printing and scanning with my fancy but inexpensive
HP printer at home, but I've never been able to succeed in printing at
the office. The newest Feisty version of the printer installer does
see various printers on our network, but I am obviously doing
something wrong, and not even sure where to encapsulate the problem...
There are actually four candidates that I could use, but: One is not
visible, one has no plausible driver at all (and direct PS was
disastrous), and the third is visible but used only for faxing and
copying, but is apparently disabled for printing. (There are actually
a couple of other printers visible to the installer, but I have no
earthly idea where they might be...)

That leaves a Fuji Xerox DocuPrint C2220. I'm definitely able to
access it from Windows, but no luck so far in printing via Ubuntu. I'm
not sure if the problem is the driver... Feisty does not recommend
one, and does not offer the specifically recommended C2220, so I
guessed that C20 might be the correct one (based on the groupings of
the HP printer drivers). No error messages at this end, but I think I
was able to induce an error message on the printer end. (No, I'm not
certain that I am the person who induced it, and not certain what the
error was, since the details were in Japanese...)

Alternately, might it be easier to make the printer shared on the
Windows machine and print through that route?

Suggestions? Diagnostics? Or where can I get a goat to sacrifice to
the printer demons?

Oh yes. Alas and alack, the company doesn't actually want to
officially support Linux, and especially not Ubuntu.

No clue. How is the printers connected to the computer, network etc?

They only need to support IPP or LPD protocoll.

Good luck

Make sure you've installed CUPS.

Then track down the PPD file for your printer. Copy it to the
/etc/cups/ppd directory, given it the name you want to give to your
printer queue (e.g. lp0.ppd for the lp0 printer queue). Then add an
entry to your printers.conf file (in /etc/cups). For example, here's
how I access ours:

1. Download xr-wc3545.ppd and copy it to:

/etc/cups/ppd/lp1.ppd

2. Add this to /etc/cups/printers.conf:

<Printer lp1>
Info Xerox WorkCentre Pro C3545
Location 3446 Hallway
DeviceURI socket://aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd:9100
State Idle
StateTime 1169560323
Accepting Yes
Shared Yes
JobSheets none none
QuotaPeriod 0
PageLimit 0
KLimit 0
OpPolicy default
ErrorPolicy stop-printer
</Printer>

If you need it to be the default printer:

<DefaultPrinter lp1>

3. Restart cups: /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

You can look at how others configure their billy-boxes. The
instructions I gave were for raw sockets and a network printer.
