Jack is a realy good for-real-time-less-then-1ms-delay-audio-for-
digital-studio-mixing-CD-albums-machine-that-outperform-Mac-and-PC-
with-recompiled-kernel solution. Overkill for just playing/mixing
sound streams.
Alsa is all you should need, don't touch OSS with a ten feet pole.
If you need to mix or play many streams the same time, esd or kde's
"what's the name" mixer is usally enough. You could also try ALSA
with dmix if it soesn't work already to play many sound streams at the
same time (it usally does, but not allways).
There are many examples on the net, just google for "dmix asoundrc"
and you should get some hits how your ~/.asoundrc shoud look like.
