Author Seeing built in Emachines T2642 lan and sound from kubuntu 6.06.1 (Dapper)?

Dear Debian/Ubuntu Penguin Folk,

I inherited a shell of an emachines T2642 (2.6 gHz Celeron, labeled for
Windows XP) that had no hard drive. The motherboard has built in T10/T100
LAN and sound in it.

Running kubuntu 6.06.1 from the CD drive I was unable to see either the LAN
or the sound card, even though the LAN port lighted up when cabled to my
Linksys firewall box. The LAN didn't even show up in the networked device
list and kubuntu said the machine had no sound card. However by putting in
an old Kingston T10 LAN card I was able to get the machine to see the
internet. I then put a spare 15 gig hard drive in the unit and installed
the kubuntu, then fetched all of the several hundred updates that Adept
pointed out to me. But even after reboot it still could not see the
motherboard LAN or sound.

Is there a driver I need to get in order to try to see the LAN and sound
motherboard devices? Or a diagnostic tool I can run to check if it is a
motherboard issue? The box came to me sans its original OS and I don't have
any installable Windows to try it with to see if there is a hardware issue.

Thanks to all in advance,
HTRN

Have you checked the BIOS to make sure that the on-board LAN and Sound are
enabled? Also, find out what chipsets each uses, to see if you need to
locate proper drivers for them.

Eh?!
It appears the problems with the LAN and sound are a bit more basic
than "NFS will fix it".

Firstly, as someone said, check that the sound and networking have not been
disabled in the BIOS.
If they are both OK in the BIOS, then you need to identify the chipset for
your LAN and sound, open up a command prompt (console) and enter:

sudo lspci -v

And you should see entries like:
0000:05:0c.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8001
Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 13)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Marvell 88E8001 Gigabit Ethernet

Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 66
Memory at d1000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]

Expansion ROM at 50000000 [disabled] [size=128K]

This may give you more information on what the chipsets for sound and LAN
are.

Sounds like a usefull machine.

In BIOS there is possible to turn devices on the mother board off.
Then no OS will be
able to see that hardware. To check, and solve this, you need to go
into BIOS (which you
select when you boot the machine up), and reset all BIOS
configurations to deafult.
There usally are some option to do that

We also need more information to see what hardware you have in your
machine.
Try these commands and post here what the result are. The commands
are:
'lspci'
'ifconfig'
'cat /proc/cpuinfo'
'cat /proc/asound/cards'
'ls /proc/asound'

Good luck

(NFS is a network file system and will only work when your network
works. Usefull
to share files between your machines in you LAN. Like SMB in MS
Windows, which
you can get with Samba-software)

OK, I went into BIOS screen and restored default settings.

OK... any clues from the following what I should do to make the motherboard

Ok, I have a look now.

This is the sound card.[vbcol=seagreen]

This is one of your Ethernet cards.

And here you have a "bad" Winmodem. Conexant is not that easy to get
to work under Linux.
No information from the manufacturer to Linux kernel developers

This (eth0) looks like it should be the ethernet card that doesn't
work. That could be becouse it's not configured. Should be
configured in the text file "/etc/network/interfaces" like eth1 stanza
in that file. If you have problems with that, just post it here so we
can have a look at it.

>
> --- no soundcards ---

Ok, so you don't have the right driver installed for your sound card.
If ALSA knows about it, it should have been here in that file.
You need to get that loaded into the kernel. ALSA web pages should
give you info on what driver you need for this one.

What does 'lsmod' gives you? That would be usefull to see for us.
