Besides Debian and Ubuntu 7.04, what other free and major distribtuions are
out there? I looked at Red Hat and Katana and they seem to cost money.

Fedora Core (free RedHat), Mepis, PCLinuxOS, Zen, Arch, Mandriva.

I'd say Xandros, but they're dealing with the devil (see below) now.

FWIW...

Minor nit--the URL/reference didn't show up in my reader; here's another:

Anyway, I agree completely: You could not now *PAY* me to do Xandros. It's
simply now another distro I won't be considering to replace Novell/SuSE.

This is is a good place to find lots of different distributions.
If you Pete have some friends that also uses Linux, it can be a good
choise to use same distribution as them, as it is easier to get help
then.

mandrivel, fedora, opensuse, knoppix, elive, . . .

Ubuntu is based on Debian, as well as Knoppix and any distribution
derived from Knoppix.
