Lack of updates lately?
|
|
|
| Hello,
Is it me or have there been lack of updates this week and last week via
apt-get update and apt-get upgrades? This is for both testing (by
itself) and unstable setups.
Currently, testing shows (as of 7/23/2007 3 PM PDT):
Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
compiz-core compiz-plugins dcoprss gcc-4.2-base gimp gimp-data ifstat
kdenetwork kdenetwork-filesharing
kdenetwork-kfile-plugins kdict kdnssd kget knewsticker kopete kpf kppp
krdc krfb ksirc kwifimanager
libaudio-dev libaudio2 libc6 libc6-dev libdecoration0 libfreetype6
libfreetype6-dev libgcc1 libgimp2.0
libgsf-1-114 liblcms1 liblcms1-dev libpango1.0-0 libpango1.0-dev
librss1 libsasl2-2 libsasl2-modules
libstdc++6 linux-image-2.6-k7 module-init-tools multitail python-cairo
python-gobject python-pyogg
python2.4 python2.4-minimal xfs xnest xserver-xorg-core
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 50 not upgraded.
These packages were pretty much the same for almost a week or so. Thank
you in advance.

How is this a problem?
There may a lack of new upstream releases or known bugs. Or the
package maintainers may be busy. Or the packages you don't use may be
the ones that are being updated twice a day.
You certainly don't have a configuration problem, since I'm getting
the same results on a mixed testing/unstable/experimental box.
Personally, I'm enjoying the peace and quiet. :-)

OK good. I don't mind a break if there are no updates. I thought
something broke on my box!!

I am not doing that dist-upgrade yet because of the Kernel upgrade,
reboot requirement, and lack of disk space for 2.6.21 (will deal with it
later when I need this version and have free time to fix it):

Don't I need those? As the other guy said, he noticed quietness too. I
thought my box was broken or something. ;)

Not a problem.
linux-kernel-headers will be replaced with linux-libc-dev, and you'll already
have module-init-tools, so no problem with modutils disappearing (and anyway
it isn't useful with 2.6-series kernels).

Cool! I always have a hard time to know if it is safe to remove or not.
I removed those two and others were installed:

It's you. I've lost track of how many megabytes Sid has wanted recently,
and it's 66 MB tonight. That's not counting the ones that want to remove
Gnome or most of KDE, which I have currently declined to do. And Pan is
broken. BIG upheavals in Sid.

If you are using ftp.debian.org as your apt source - this mirror is
currently broken (ran out of disc space afaik), and wasn't updated since
18/07/2007
You can find other mirrors at http://www.debian.org/mirror/list

What a silly question. He gave you a perfectly good answer. Pick
another mirror.
You do realize Debian is an all volunteer effort, yes? Perhaps you
could send them a wad of cash they can put toward the purchase of a
new drive. I'm sure they'd be grateful for your support. I would
be.

Isn't ftp.debian.org a main site that mirrors based on? Wouldn't they
fix their disk space shortage right away?

A question never is silly, it may seem so for those knowing the answer.

Given his expressed assumption any mirror will be broken while the origional
is, this answer in turn may seem silly to the OP.
Given common security practise NONE of the mirrors exposed to the public is
likely be the master.
http://www.debian.org/doc/developer....html#s-mirrors
seems to validate my assumption.

It wasn't that part that was silly. It was that he questioned the
answer given, without testing. If he would have done that, he would
ended up with another, more interested question. That you askes and
answer later.
It's also silly that he more or less demanded Debian to fix the
diskspace on the faulty server for him, for free. He got a sudgestion
how to solve it (send more money). But he ignored that part. Not
once, but twice.
(That was my interpretation of his "questions", any way)
Which still is the right answer for Ant's original question.

That is a relevant question, so he should have asked that. Not demand
some one to shell out money on his behalf.
(Again, that was my interpretation of Ant's posts, which may be
faulty. As English is not my native language)
