The following updates are from the distributedcomputing.info website
( http://distributedcomputing.info/ ). These updates cover public distributed
computing projects (projects in which anyone can participate).

February 18, 2005

- ( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap-math.html#GIMPS ) GIMPS may have
discovered the 42nd known Mersenne prime today. Verification of the prime
candidate will take one to two weeks. If the candidate is verified, it will
be a record prime, but will have fewer than 10 million digits.

- ( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap...ce.html#setinew ) New SETI@home
is having problems with its project data server array. The project server
may be occasionally unavailable while the problem is resolved.

- the ( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap-science.html#eon ) eOn project
updated its website design on February 13, added detailed statistics on
February 12, released a new version of its Windows client on February 12,
and released a new version of its Linux client on February 9

- ( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap....html#lhcathome ) LHC@home has
almost completed testing, and hopes to release its new software clients next
Monday

Distributed hardware Evolution Project began moving its project server to a
Free-DC server yesterday. The migration should be finished in a week.
Existing project clients will need to be reconfigured after the project
server has been migrated.

- 2^709 + 1 was completely factored yesterday by someone outside of the

project

- new ( http://distributedcomputing.info/news.html#050217 ) news article: the
SHA-1 encryption method, used for almost all secure online communications,
has been broken by three Chinese researchers, using a distributed computing
application

an overview and update of the
( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap...s.html#proteome ) Human
Proteome Folding project

- new ( http://distributedcomputing.info/news.html#050217-3 ) news article:
when they are not in use by students and faculty, Macintosh computers in
some Kentucky public schools will be used in a Kentucky state grid for the
University of Louisville's James Graham Brown Cancer Center project to look
for new cancer therapies
