The following updates are from the distributedcomputing.info website
( http://distributedcomputing.info/ ). These updates cover public distributed
computing projects (projects in which anyone can participate).

April 20, 2005

- new active Life Sciences project:
( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap....html#prosurfer ) PROSURFER
(PROtein SURFace Exploratory Research, a Japanese BOINC-based project for
the "cell computing Birth" project) is searching for similar proteins in the
human genome to help scientists design drugs with fewer side-effects

- new upcoming project:
( http://distributedcomputing.info/upcoming.html#orbit ) Orbit@home will
monitor the potential danger to Earth from Near Earth Objects (note that
information about this project is speculative)

- ( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap-math.html#nfsnet ) NFSNET completed
the factorization of 5^304 + 1, 2^716 + 1 and 5^307 + 1 on April 5

- ( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap-science.html#cpdn )
climateprediction.net has completed 6 million model years of simulation as
of yesterday

- as of April 17, some European
( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap....html#setiboinc ) SETI@home
BOINC participants may not be able to connect to the project server due to
a network peering issues. A ( http://www.iantighe.com/boincers.htm ) proxy
workaround is available for these participants. Also, volunteers have
ported SETI@home and BOINC to
"( http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_other.php ) a variety of platforms,
including Solaris/x86-64, Linux/x86-64, Linux/PPC, HP-UX, and FreeBSD."

- ( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap...mindindoorsense ) Open
Mind Indoor Common Sense now has 200 Amazon US$25 Amazon.com gift
certificates to award to participants. 105 gift certificates have been
awarded as of April 14.

- version 4.67 of
( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap....html#lhcathome ) LHC@home's
SixTrack client is available for Windows as of April 12. It disables the
F5 key. Also, as of today the project has received results from all but 10
of its beta test work units, and all results are 100% correct.

- ( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap....html#predictor )
Predictor@Home has set client workunit quotas to 15 per day, in order to
reduce the overall error rate. But as of April 13, clients which return
error-free results can increase their quotas up to 65 work units per day.
Also, participants are encouraged to check their client message files for
errors and to report the errors. Many clients have lower work unit quotas
because of these errors.

- as of April 13 the ( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap-science.html#eon )
eOn Windows clients should automatically download a new library which makes
the clients run three times faster than with the previous library
