| The following updates are from the distributedcomputing.info website
( http://distributedcomputing.info/ ). These updates cover public distributed
computing projects (projects in which anyone can participate).
September 12, 2005
- ( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap....html#lhcathome ) LHC@home
released its fourth newsletter on September 8, 2005. The project completed
its first batch of 250,000 1-million turn work units on August 26, and is
now processing its second batch. The complexity of the work units will
increase in the future, because "as real machine components are installed
the true measured parameters are introduced and the results become more
critical." The project is currently analyzing version 6.4 of the LHC
machine, and will begin analyzing version 6.5 soon.</li>
- ( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap...#einsteinathome )
Einstein@Home posted a detailed
( http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/PartialS3Results ) status report with the
results of the S3 data analysis yesterday</li>
- ( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap-math.html#sigps ) SIGPS found prime
99468970^16384 + 1 on September 8</li>
- ( http://distributedcomputing.info/up...tml#orbitathome ) orbit@home
released its first application, for the i686-pc-linux-gnu platform only,
on September 9. "This first version of the scientific application will be
able to determine the orbit of any asteroid, using only the astrometric
observations." The project is generating work units, and is
troubleshooting problems in the client and server as it encounters them.
- the ( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap-science.html#cpdn )
climateprediction.net BOINC project server was upgraded to the latest
version on September 10. "This will fix some bugs and have some new
features such as an improved BOINC forum, ability to handle the new BOINC
manager 'wizard' that will be out soon (i.e. major version 5.0+)." Also,
an upload server at the university of Bern in Switzerland was unavailable
as of August 28, due to severe flooding. This problem only affects CPDN
BOINC users with the server entry phkup21.unibe.ch in their BOINC
client_state.xml file. A server redirect is in place as of yesterday, but
the BOINC client gives up on uploading a work unit result after retrying
for two weeks, and some users may be in danger of losing credit. A
technical workaround exists for users for whom the redirect does not work.
See more information in a
( http://www.climateprediction.net/bo...pic.php?p=29490 ) discussion
thread about the problem.
- version 2.5 of the
( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap...html#sierpinski ) Seventeen or
Bust client is available for Windows and Linux as of September 10. The
new version has the following features: faster SSE2 code for A64/P4
processors; fixes known bug with old x87 CPUs that don't support prefetch;
supports FFTs up to 32 million.
- a new riesel.dat file is available for
( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap...tml#rieselsieve ) Riesel Sieve
as of today. Also, the Riesel Sieve forums have an
( http://forum.rieselsieve.com/rss.php ) RSS feed as of September 10.
Finally, as of yesterday the processing of sieving results is automated:
factors submitted through the submit page or via Rieselator are verified
via php GMP MOD and then sent to the database. Every 15 minutes the new
factors are scored and the project stats are updated.
- the ( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap...tml#minimalsums ) Minimal
Equal Sums of Like Powers project server is back online as of yesterday.
If your client can't connect to the server, you may need to "press Ctrl-U,
then change the server name from eulernet.org to euler.myip.org. This may
solve your problem if the DNS is incorrect."
- the ( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap....html#predictor )
Predictor@home project server crashed today due to a failure on the root
drive over the weekend. The scheduler will be offline until a replacement
drive arrives. Also, the project is testing a new work unit generator as
of September 7, which may have caused the project server to be temporarily
unavailable during the following days.
- as of September 1,
( http://distributedcomputing.info/ap....html#primegrid ) Message@Home
is known as PrimeGrid. The project's main goal is still to factor the
number in the RSA Factoring Challenge.
- as of August 19, ( http://distributedcomputing.info/upcoming.html#burp )
BURP project participants can register their server to become a BURP
mirror to help distribute the load of transfering input files, movie files,
application files, and other project-related files.
- new ( http://distributedcomputing.info/news.html#050906 ) news article: a
very-well-written overview of
