Sharing sound channel with diff applications.

Hi.
I'm using FC2. Gnome desktop.
most of the time i log on, i play XMMS for music.
doesn't linux share it's sound channel?
for example, i tried to play a video clip and it warns me of an error
trying to use my sound channel.
