I am the newest of newbies operating way out of my comfort zone. I've just
installed RH9 and it is mostly working. Except that adding our laser
printer fails, for some unknown reason. The printer configuration window
doesn't explain what the problem is.

What I've done is:
1. Run the printer configuration tool. 2. Tell it I want to add a new SMB
printer. The Help says that the tool wil automatically look for shares. It
never finds the printer I want to add. So the help says to 3. Click the
specify button.
4. The specify box opens and asks for 5 items: a workgroup, a server,
share (which the help says is the printer name), user name and password.
5. I give it all these, and it seems to go and look and then comes back
and displays the box with the same information.

So I wondered if there's a syntax error in the what I'm entering.

The Windows workgroup name is home. I've tried Home and home and HOME none
of them works.
I've been giving an IP address for the server. The IP is correct, and I
can ping it.
The Windows name for the printer which I've been using as the Share is hp
LaserJet 1300 PS. I've tried this both with spaces and with underscores
where the spaces were.
The user name and password are correct and correctly typed.

I am clueless what to try next or where else to look for the problem. Does
the windows machine where the printer is attached need to be running
something?

TIA for your help.

Stan
