Hello all,
I am trying to reinstall mysql after uninstalling it serveral months
ago. I downloaded the latest version and after a few problems got it
to install (I thought). It got to the part where it was giving
instructions on how to set up the SQL administrator account by
"/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password etc.." but I am getting "no such
file or directory" when I try that command.

package MySQL-server-4.0.22-0 is already installed
package MySQL-shared-compat-4.0.21-0 is already installed
file /usr/lib/libmysqlclient.so.12.0.0 from install of
MySQL-shared-4.0.22-0 conflicts with file from package
MySQL-shared-compat-4.0.21-0
file /usr/lib/libmysqlclient_r.so.12.0.0 from install of
MySQL-shared-4.0.22-0 conflicts with file from package
MySQL-shared-compat-4.0.21-0
file /usr/lib/libmysqlclient.so.12.0.0 conflicts between
attempted installs of MySQL-shared-compat-4.0.21-0 and
MySQL-shared-4.0.22-0
file /usr/lib/libmysqlclient_r.so.12.0.0 conflicts between
attempted installs of MySQL-shared-compat-4.0.21-0 and
MySQL-shared-4.0.22-0

I am a novice at this so I am not sure what to try next.
Thanks for any help/suggestions,
Brian

Could this possibly be due to the fact that Red Hat and Fedora only
install mysql 3.23 and not mysql 4.0 (perceived licence problems).

If so, can you not re-install mysql 3.23 with apt (or Synaptic)? There
is a method for upgrading to mysql 4.0 on Red Hat at:

http://fedoranews.org/contributors/tony_smith/mysql/

which I seem to have effected successfully implemented on FC2.

Apologies if I've grabbed the wrong end of the stick.

It's less a perceived license problem than a real problem.

None the less, mysqladmin is part of the 3.23 install.

You need to install the mysql-server and mysql packages.

Is mysql 4.x not included in the free download version of SuSE (as it is
in the purchase version) ?

P.S Afraid I'm new to this type of newsgroup - if anyone can let me know
if I should be able to edit/delete my own postings.

What they include depends on SuSE's policy towards software licensing.
