Printer Problem and "Support" for RH Enterprise WS Release 9 (Shrike)
|

| I'm beginning to suspect that my printer problem is related to a basic problem in my
RH WS Rel 9 product that was not fixed. The symptom is that when I try to do an lpr
to my printer, I get a message that states, "server-error-service-unavailable". My
suspicions come from the fact that I did find something in the general knowledge base
about about this error message and a printer on a network for RH 9.0--not Enterprise.
If I need an update to the printer facilities, the question becomes where will I find
it, since this product no longer is supported. Isn't there some old support page for
this product on the RH site? I see a lot of mention of Enterprise, but nothing
specific to 9. Am I missing something there?
I guess what I'm getting at here is that when it is said that RH has brought Shrike
to the end of the line, do we mean that all traces of its past history in their site
has been erased?
Apparently, one can change to Fedora, but is this true of both the Enterprise and
non-Enterprise versions?

First, I and others have already informed you that that there is no such
thing as RH Enterprise WS Release 9 (Shrike). To find out what you have
installed use the command; cat /etc/redhat-release
Second, since you will not identify your printer or provide any other
helpful information, visit; http://www.linuxprinting.org/ for help in
getting this resolved.
Also please take the time and review;

Please quit guessing and assuming, the manuals (please download them and
have them handy for reading and reference) are here;
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/
All the updates are available here(and a number of other places);
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/updates/9/en/os/
I have already told you (in earlier replies to you in this newsgroup)
about using apt/synaptic or yum along with the Fedora Legacy site (
http://fedoralegacy.org/ ) to update your system. Since you do not have
(or want to) your Linux system connected to the Internet visit the ftp
site listed above and download all the updates for use when needed,
required or wanted. It is a good idea to download them all and have them
available on CD or other media. Additional help is available in a number
of places, for example; http://www.tldp.org/

The time and date are correct, it is the date when the kernel was built
and not when you installed it.

Yes, modify the /etc/inittab file and change; id:5:initdefault: Replace
the five with a three.

The same thing should readable by typing; cat /etc/redhat-release

How about RHL9 or Red Hat Linux 9 or maybe the output of the typed
command; cat /etc/redhat-release

It would be helpful if you provided the exact command you typed when you
do a 'lpr to my printer'. In the mean time -- cups, hpijs and lots of
other updates may resolve this problem. Consider updating the installed
RPM packages, again you can download all the Red Hat Linux 9 updates from;
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/updates/9/en/os/
LinuxPrinting.org will provide you with everything you need to configure
your printer;
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_p...HP-DeskJet_812C
Hints: follow the CUPS link and maybe download the foomatic-rip and
foomatic-gswrapper files if needed and follow the instructions if needed.
You can also compare your /etc/cups/ppd/<printer_name>.ppd to the one they
provide on the page above. Also if I remember correctly you may want to
(after at least updating cups to the latest from the ftp link above) as
root type something like;
/usr/bin/enable < The name you gave your printer in Printer Config Tool>
Example(assuming the printer name is HP812C); /usr/bin/enable HP812C

The winning Power Ball lottery numbers for tonight's drawing :-)

CUPS doesn't use /etc/printcap for its configuration, it's there just
for compatibility with older software. CUPS has a HTML-based
configuration interface that can be accessed through
