I'm consolidating my responses to both of you in this message.

I checked with my wife to see that I didn't actually use her CDs to install on my
machine. I didn't.

It strikes me that perhaps this oddity of a mismatch between the system and my set of
CDs has something to do with the fact that I built a realtime linux kernel on this
machine from the same source. In other words I can boot from this machine as : DOS
(W2000), Linux and RTLinux. I signed on to the rtlinux boot and ran uname -a to get:

.... 2.4.20-rtl3.2-pre2 #2 ... Sept. 2 2004

I don't recall ever doing anything in Sept. 2004 to rtlinux on this machine. It is
not the machine that is operational. It became a test bed for building the rt kernel.

The printer command issued at the prompt is:
lpr -Pprinter junk.txt, where printer is the name of my printer.

The same error occurs if I try to use the Test menu while in the Printer Config Tool.

Note that I do not have any modem (Yes. That'll wait for another day.) for the
machine we are talking about. All I've got is a zip drive to transfer data from
machine to machine.

Other answers below. You can skip the next few paragraphs without losing the thread
on the printer.

===================
I wouldn't mind updating the Linux but have a bit of reluctance in doing so, because
of the rtlinux kernel. The good news is that it's on my machine that is not used for
the meteor imaging application, so I really don't care if the application goes awry.

The application builders were not able to give me a clue as to whether I would run
afoul of anything if I did an update, particularly if I go all the way to Fedora.
I'll push ahead with the printer problem for awhile and see if it's a dead end for
what I have. It would be good to have a printer on this machine for Linux or on the
local net for this or the operational machine. However, the major goal is to get the
the time synchronization of the Linux machine available via the XP machine (Repeating
earlier comments on that, it is the only one of my machines that is heavily on the
internet and has an outside connection.) At present, I'm on hold to make the changes
in XP to use it as a synch. It requires fathoming their register and file back up.
This is greatly different that the NT and Win 2000 versions, which used the concept
of an ERD, error recovery disk.

Let me put in an aside about the application. I have the qualifications to do it, and
was able to join the Sandia National Labs, NM, effort that has been around for about
5 years. It's strictly a volunteer effort on my part, but has taken up lots of time.
Sandia runs it on a shoestring. They gave me the imaging equipment free, application
software, cables, etc., but not the computer or OS. That I had to supply. RH 9 was
the favored tool at the time. It was vaguely stated that 'all you need is a RH linux
box and it'll be OK." Supposedly this required at most installing Linux and following
a set of 2 pages of instructions to build the kernel. Sure. It's been quite a bit
more formidable task than that, especially getting a good install and dealing with
those itty bitty linux problems that crop up.

My meteor buddy, who has the same system, and I have captured over 100 fireball
images since we started in about April. Sometimes we get the same object, which is
great. It takes a powerful fireball to get the interest of Sandia, and we've had
about four of those as duals. The weakness of the dual observations is accurately
recording the time. That's why my interest in using the internet for a synch. Sandia
just doesn't have the bucks to supply us with clock boards.

Jean-David:
lpd is not running, but cupsd is.

The printcap is minimal. Two entries, aside from the 3 header lines, which are:
printer:
astro:

That's it.

Don't know about the config files for the printer--0.6.47-11-1-i386. Where would I
find them?

Lenard:

cat /etc/redhat-release gives:
Redhat Linux Release 9 (Shrike)

Question about actual lpr command answered above.

Winning numbers that may be use for the Power Ball lottery are the integers from 1 to
60. :-) I'm assuming your lottery numbers are the same as in CA. Here are the ones I
used last Wednesday in CA: 01 05 06 25 40. Mega 02. Only one matched. Good luck!
