openoffice.org-1.1.2 for FC2?
|
|
| Don Campbell 2004-09-15, 11:11 am |
| Does anyone have an idea about why it takes so long for
rpms of OOo to come out for Fedora Core?
1.1.2 has been out for quite some time and still no
FC2 rpms.

Look here;
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/p...86/Fedora/RPMS/
Or use one of the mirror sites;

I spoke too soon. Instead of simply installing on FC2, I get
obscure dependencies:

> libedataserver.so.3 is needed by openoffice.org-libs-1.1.2-3
Googling for these gives me hints that some evolution data server is
what provides libedataserver.so.3?? I don't want to screw around
with an Evolution server. Ho hum...Back to 1.1.1 I guess.
Which brings me back to the original question.
My issue with installing from the tarball is that every time I upgrade
I have to go through the dog and pony show of setting it all up from
scratch. The tarball doesn't know my old settings, it uses different
commands to invoke the applications than RH/FC use. I realize that some
of this is a Fedora not an OOo issue, but it sure is annoying for such
a great suite of applications to be a pain to upgrade.

Ouch, it gets worse. Trying to install evolution-data-server gets
a new list of dependencies--stemming to openldap. Then trying to
install openldap gets even more dependencies. Dependency hell is
alive and foiling me with openoffice.org-1.1.2 What a pain. I'll
wait I guess.

Try using the oo-1.1.2 rpms from here(the unofficial KDE-3.3 update RPM's
are here also);
ftp://apt.kde-redhat.org/apt/kde-redhat/2/RPMS.testing/
The openoffice.org-i18n-1.1.2-3.0 rpm is here; http://rpm.pbone.net/
Look for; openoffice.org-i18n-1.1.2-3.0.kde.i386.rpm

Thanks again for replying.
I don't have kde installed. I would assume that the rpms
you pointed to are kde specific? I gather that's part of the
problem. It would appear that kde is favored over gnome
by the developers?

It's a development package, so it's built for FC3test1 + current
development updates. It might work on FC2 if you install all the
dependecies, but then your system isn't really FC2 anymore.

Haven't you heard about yum and up2date? They will take care of the
dependencies automatically.

Yeah, sure. I have up2date setup and get almost everything I need
that way. But, guess what--I type "up2date openoffice.org" and
after much grinding and seeking up2date announces proudly that
my openoffice.org-1.1.1 is already up to date.
Have you heard of a yum depository that has openoffice.org-1.1.2?

Yeah, so then we just decide that OOo-1.1.2 isn't going to
be packaged for FC2?
I'd gladly make the rpm myself but I'm not clear about how to
get all the parts lined up to make it work.

Not having KDE installed might be a problem, but you might already have
all the required KDE portions already installed. I really can't say for
sure. I'm the opposite of you, I do not have the Gnome Desktop installed.
Some developers like Gnome, some KDE while others do not care. In the case
of the OO at the kde-redhat, yes the preferred GUI desktop is KDE. Taking
a look the the *.txt files for the two OO RPM's shows;
SHORT PACKAGE INFO
Name: openoffice.org-1.1.2-3.0.2.kde
REQUIRES (short list):
perl
libart_lgpl >= 2.3.13
openoffice.org-libs = 0:1.1.2-3.0.2.kde fontconfig
fontconfig
SHORT PACKAGE INFO
Name: openoffice.org-libs-1.1.2-3.0.2.kde
REQUIRES (short list):
libart_lgpl_2.so.2
libatk-1.0.so.0
libcomphelp3gcc3.so
libcppuhelpergcc3.so.3
libcppu.so.3
So they just might work for you, but like I said they may not. It also
shows that the OO-1.1.2 i18n RPM is not required by the two kde-redhat
OO-1.1.2 RPM's however.

You must configure up2date to include the development packages.
Add these two lines to /etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources:
yum fedora-core-rawhide http://download.fedora.redhat.com/p...re/development/$ARCH/
yum-mirror fedora-core-rawhide http://fedora.redhat.com/download/u...ra-core-rawhide

Thanks for the idea. As you said in another post, I wouldn't
have FC2 anymore. Rather it would be a conglomeration of
FC2 and and a pre version of FC3. I've fallen into that trap
before and ended up with a mess of partially broken applications.
I'll wait. I do think it's odd that one of the most pivotal
applications, OOo, has been so haphazardly supported by FC2--one of the
mainstream distros.
