First, if the mouse becomes active after 4-5 seconds but this doesn't give
you enough time to select an option, you could try increasing the timeout
value in /boot/grub/grub.conf. This should enable you to use the mouse,
albeit after a bit of a delay.
Second, what sort of keyboard do you have? That is, is it a standard AT
keyboard or a USB keyboard? If the latter, there might be a BIOS option
to enable a keyboard legacy mode or modify how it operates. I don't know
of any GRUB options relating to this, but I might just be unaware of an
option that does exist, so you might want to peruse the GRUB Info pages
in search of a USB keyboard option.
