What the dilio with evolution and RH9

My RH Network update agent apparently doesn't check for evo updates as
it never tells me evolution needs updating.
I can receive email with my evolution 2.0.4, but if I try to send mail
it crashes. I figure perhaps if I update it might actually send too.
I found the evolution site today and downloaded the sources and tried
to configure. It complained I was missing "atk" whatever that is.
So I trashed that dir and downloaded the latest binaries. Same error.
OK, uncle... So I download atk-1.10.3, and try to install it. It
complains:
*** Could not run GLIB test program
It's like the never-ending cascading list of requirements. I'm sure
that install, whatever it is, will require dilio > 1.45 or some doggone
thingie.
I also tried to "yum" them, which also didn't work.
Maybe 2-3 days of screwing around I'll get it working!

What do you expect from a distribution that was discontinued about a year
and a half ago?
