Hello,

A friend has given me a Emachines Etower 500is to
troubleshoot. It will not successfully decompress many
files from the restore CD for Windows 98(responds with
"bad crc" for many files). I assumed this is a hardware
problem. I downloaded two memory diagnostic programs
(memtest86+ and Docmemory). Both showed a large number
or memory errors. Therefore, I ordered a memory replacement
from Kingston. It changed nothing (as a second replacement
later on also changed nothing). Recently I worried about the power
supply. Yesterday I checked the voltage from the power
supply and it read 3.3V (as required for the memory).
So much for Windows.
Today, I tried to install RH 9 just to see the way
the installation would behave. It responded with
"incomplete literal tree" and halted the installation.
A search on Google found one post that blamed faulty
RAM. I know the installation CD works because I've
used it successfully on another machine. I don't
know which way to proceed. Does anyone have an idea ?

It might not be the RAM it could be the cache memory built on the
motherboard or internal to the CPU in either case you will to replace
the faulty part.
