Author Installing Gnome 2.10 on FC3?

Hi,

I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to Linux matters. I have Gnome
2.8 running at the moment and would like to install version 2.10.

I have downloaded all the packages from the Gnome ftp site
(http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/desk...2.10.0/sources/) into a
directory on my PC. What do I do next?

Is this a simple procedure or is it easier just to wait until it comes out
via the FC3 update?

Thanks...

Get GARNOME if you don't already have it;

Depends on your skill level some will say it's a fairly simple procedure
some will not. You may have to do a number of other updates and
packages before you build Gnome 2.10, check and see if you meet the
requirements first. It may or may not come out as an FC3 update unless
you count FC4 as an update.

If you want you can try Gnome 2.10 rpms from;
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/p...86/Fedora/RPMS/

You may need a large number of additional updates (rpm packages) from
the development site also.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the advice but after looking at the sites you mentioned I think
I will wait until an official update comes out unless anyone knows if
there is a step by step guide on how to do this update.

For me it's a bit like someone saying "just go over there and perform open
heart surgery on the man" I know what it is, just don't know how it's
done, whats more I simply don't have the time to learn.

What would be nice is one large package that just upgraded you current
Gnome version with the latest 'like for like' without all the mincing
around with tedious commands and switches. Download, click to install, Do
you want to upgrade from version X to Y?, Yes, Job done...

I think the easier you can make things like this for novice Linux users
like myself the better. That way more people would be willing to give it a
try. That said you could still install it the more custom way if you
preferred, everyones happy.

Then at least you have time to learn not to top-post. Maybe need to
google what "top-post" means?

The cloest shot for you is to google "matt rpm repository". There are
compiled GNOME 2.10 packages for FC3 on Matt's site. You just need to
learn a little bit how to use yum or apt. The learning course won't be
more than 10 minutes I think.
