Plextor offers no LINUX drivers for its DVD+R/RW Atapi drives, but I'm
thinking generic ATAPI support in RedHat 9 might be all I need to use
one of these drives. I'm using EdgeBACKUP 2.1.1 for backups. Am I in
fantasy land regarding the possibility I might be able to use a Plextor
drive? Anybody have any experience with these drives on a RH 9 system?

Thanks for any advice.

Yes, reading and writing to DVD media is fairly easy. To get you
started;

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/...l/admin-primer/
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/...-started-guide/
http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/
http://www.k3b.org/

Don't know EdgeBACKUP, what is it some Windows Application????

I don't have a Plextor DVD+R/RW drive, but on my laptop I have;

$ cdrecord -scanbus
Cdrecord-Clone 2.01-dvd (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2004 Jörg
Schilling
Note: This version is an unofficial (modified) version with DVD support
Note: and therefore may have bugs that are not present in the original.
Note: Please send bug reports or support requests to
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla
Note: The author of cdrecord should not be bothered with problems in
this version.
scsidev: 'ATA'
devname: 'ATA'
scsibus: -2 target: -2 lun: -2
Linux sg driver version: 3.5.27
Using libscg version 'schily-0.8'.
cdrecord: Warning: using inofficial libscg transport code version
(schily - Red Hat-scsi-linux-sg.c-1.83-RH '@(#)scsi-linux-sg.c
1.83 04/05/20 Copyright 1997 J. Schilling').
scsibus1:
1,0,0 100) 'TOSHIBA ' 'DVD-ROM SD-R6112' 'X231' Removable
CD-ROM

which works just fine.

Dear Lenard,

Thanks for the feedback. EdgeBACKUP is a comprehensive backup
package that migrated to LINUX from the UNIX world (www.microlite.com).

I don't know what's available for RH 9, but I have a Plextor
PX-708 on a Fedora Core 2 system and it does NOT work with
DVD+R(W). (The K3b app uses the dvd+rw-tools drivers.)
It works fine for CD-R(W) and DVD-R(W).

(Kind of disappointing since Plextor ATAPI optical drives have in
the past usually been fully compatible.)

I have a Plextor PX-716 on a Fedora Core 3 and
it does work with both DVD-R(W) ans DVD+R(W).
