Author Screensaver locks up in Fedora Core 6

I just installed Fedora Core 6, and when ANY screensaver starts,
the screensaver works, but I cannot return to the desktop. The
screen just turns black, and I have to Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to get
out of it. This happens with KDE, GNOME, or XFCE, with the GL
screensavers or non-GL. I have an Nvidia GEforce video card, and
it happens with the nvidia-glx driver loaded or not. I just updated
the system, and the xscreensaver was updated, but that did not help.
Any ideas how to fix this?

-Thanks

Options:

1) don't use the screensaver
2) Try screensaver in 'blank screen' mode
3) yum install xlock
4) use DPMS (xset dpms force off) [man xset]
