Has anyone found a company that offers Static IP so we can setup VPN
with a Satellite Internet connection?

We are located in a rural area and satellite is our only high-speed
choice...

Thank you!

Use a dynamic DNS service like no-ip.com and routers that can use FQDN for
the gateways (like the Linksys BEFSX41), and you should be able to set up a
VPN tunnel over a link with dynamic IP addresses (as long as the addresses
don't change too often).

Keep in mind that you might not like the results. VPNs over satellite
connections are usually not much faster than dial-up speeds, when they work
at all. I've found that VPN over ISDN lines (which are generally available
everywhere) are a faster and more cost-effective alternative when the cost
of other digital circuits like fractional T1's are out of the question.

There is a router that addresses this performance issue with VPN over
satellite -
see http://www.encorenetworks.com/vsr-30.htm
However it is rather more expensive than the Linksys option mentioned by the
earlier poster

Hi,

It's generally taken that sat comms won't work too well with VPN due to latency. Whilst their are a few ISP's out their who claim that it is potentially possible the cost implications are fairly horrific. If you can even manange a limited ADSL connection (say 512) you can channel bond in the same manner as ISDN. If you use a cisco router (the name of which i can't remember) it will allow you to bond two ADSL channels or more thereby increasing your connection both up and down. Many ISP's are now supporting this too e.g. Nildram. Have fun!

Gday mate,

We solved this problem ages ago - XXXX the VPN solution using satellite, as
the latency just messes with EVERYTHING! gaaaah!

BEST way, from someone who is used to setting up connections like this in
the australian outback (!), is to simply use Terminal Services on your
client machines. Use only 256-colour option to preserve speed and sanity. Do
not use sound! XXXX using no-ip as it's crap. Use instead, http://ods.org
client. Use Snap Gear routers www.snapgear.com.au . cisco are overpriced
pieces of shit for all but anoraks and bank network geeks. Put ALL printers
on IP print servers and voila! WAN solution that WORKS.

Hope this helps
