DFL-700 + DS-601 VPN file sharing problem

| Hi,
I've managed to create a VPN connection between DFL-700 and D-Link client
software (DS-601) but I can't share folders. I have a win 98 PC (192.168.3.100)
in the DFL-700 network and XP (192.168.7.100) in the client network. The VPN
connection is created and the win98 responds to ping and there's a VNC server
running on Win 98 and I can even use the PC remotely with VNC but I can't access
the shared folders on Win98. If I move the Win98 to the same network with XP,
I can access the folders but with VPN I can't. I have disabled firewalls from
both ends but the share doesn't work. I'm using IP-addresses, so, I try to
access the Win98 with \\192.168.3.100\share. What could be wrong?

| I have the same problem, talked to D-link and they couldnīt give me an
awnser, it ended up with me adding a web based fileserver.
If you found another way, please tell me.

I was working through a similar issue between two XP Pro PC's connected by VPN. For the longest time I'd been thinking it was a DFL-700 issue when in fact it was a Windows XP firewall issue.
I had the file sharing support turned on in the XP firewall, but you also need to change the scope for the file sharing from "my network" to "any" these settings are well buried in the XP firewall exceptions settings.
Hope it helps.
WRT Windows 98. It's been a while but from what I remember, 98 (and 95) can't access windows file shares by IP alone. The sharing system needs to be located by name alone. The name gets resolved to an IP by windows internally using in one of these methods, though you can force it by using hosts/lmhosts files
1. Looks up IP on a WINS server (typically NT4 server)
2. Broadcast finds it on local lan - won't work across routed or vpn networks
3. Add ip to name mappings to both hosts and lmhosts files in C:\Windows.
