AMIGO remailer closing
|
|
| Amigo Admin 2004-09-27, 8:45 pm |
| -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Amigo remailer (and pinger) is closing.
The server that runs the Amigo remailer has become increasingly
unstable and requires rebooting about once a fortnight. Windows
2000 notices the problem and automatically reboots, however
Reliable (the remailer software) cannot run as a service and
therefore all remailer operations are paused after a reboot
until I manually log on to the machine. This does not result in
any lost mail however it does result in delays for you and
annoyance for me.
Unfortunately Reliable is no longer being developed. I have had
enough of this and I am converting my server to Linux. The Amigo
remailer may open again in the future running Mixmaster, but it
will take me some time to convert.
All incoming mail will suffer from increasing delays to reduce
the chance of the remailer being picked automatically as a next-
hop. The remailer will close at the end of September and from
1st of October, incoming mail may bounce.

That's odd. My remailer runs on Win2000 and starts up on a reboot.

I run under Windows 2000 server edition as part of a domain.

This is most probably either a variant of the randex virus, or a hardware
failure. The first should be cured by good AV software, the second will
still be there even if you change to linux.

This is true, but the sources are well documented and as you know Bikikii
admin and myself do a lot of customization on it.
I could help you find the tools needed to compile/modify reliable if you
want. You could also have a binary if you prefer that.
I like the flexibility Reliable gives me, all the things I do in it I could
not have done with mixmaster.
Sad to see you go, any chance to reconsider ?
Cheers,

There's no hardware problem I can detect (the machine is an IBM
Netfinity server and all the diagnostics check out fine). I
already run decent anti-virus (symantec corporate) software with
daily updates.

Reliable is already in the start folder - but programs in the
start folder do not run until someone logs onto the machine. My
machine runs Windows 2000 server as part of a domain. When the
machine boots it sits there waiting for a user to log on - and
until a user logs on, Reliable is not running. My MTA (and my
news server) runs as a service so it runs immediately the
machine boots and all the mail is received as normal - it's just
not processed until I log on and reliable starts up.

I have already modified the source code and recompiled reliable
to fix the few bugs that are present in the last release and add
the same small improvements as most other remops.
> Sad to see you go, any chance to reconsider ?
If you can modify Reliable to run as a service (so it loads
under the system at boot time) then no problem. I've tried the
programs that attempt to run exectuables as a service
(FireDaemon) however they don't appear to work.
I may have a play at reconfiguring the server to run as stand
alone rather than as part of the domain (and then automatically
logging in on boot up), however this will involve me
reconfiguring a lot of the machine and associated software, so
it may still be down for a while. Perhaps Linux is the better
option.

I have just found a registry hack that may allow me to get
Windows 2000 server to automatically log in to a domain on
booting, which will allow Reliable to work auto, matically if
Windows decides to restart itself.
I may suspend the change to Linux for a short while - let's see
how it goes.

Good idea, much more suitable for running servers of any kind. For
maximum security OpenBSD is best. The second best choice for security
(although easier to set up and use) is Debian "stable" GNU-Linux.

Thanks for your hard work and contribution to the remailer network.
Hope you decide to start again!

NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Enter your domain name, account name, and password in DefaultDomainName,
DefaultUserName, and DefaultPassword, using the values you would
normally type when logging in. If values do not exist, add them.
Double-click the new String Value in the right window pane, and enter
the password, etc. in the Value data box. The data type should be
