Can somebody help with interpretation of the config for Mixmaster type
remailers. Where does it indicate whether a nick on the From line is
permitted. I've tried using the remailer a couple of times and once it
passed thru a custom From line and the other time it didn't.

------------------------------

Remailer-Type: Mixmaster 3.0b2
Supported formats:
Mixmaster
Cypherpunk with PGP encryption
Cypherpunk (unencrypted)
Pool size: 20
The following header lines will be filtered:
/^From:/
/^Sender:/
/^X-Sender:/
/^Resent-/
/^Approved:/
/^Errors-To:/
/^Message-ID:/
/^Comments: Authenticated sender is/
/^Path:/
/^Received:/
/^Control: rmgroup/ => delete message
/^Control: newgroup/ => delete message
/^Control: sendsys/ => delete message
/^Control: checkgroups/ => delete message
/^Control: version/ => delete message
/^Newsgroups:.*,.*,.*,.*,.*,/ => delete message
Note that other newsgroups may be unavailable at the remailer's news
server.

I think void had an initial problem with his remailer build that meant
all lines were being accepted. This was quickly resolved.

Self-explanatory - Message types that the remailer will process.

> Pool size: 20

The size of the message pool - This is the number of messages that will
stack up on the remailer before some are processed. Bigger pools
provide better anonymity (harder to analyse traffic) but increased
latency.

Anything within the two /'s is treated as a Regular Expression, this is
a powerful kind of filter. The ^ means only match from the beginning of
a line. Taking the above first line as an example, it states:
Any line in the header beginning with From: will be filtered out. In
other words, this remailer doesn't support custom From headers.

If you'll back up one post in this thread, you will see that the post
by The Shark was sent using Void. Therefore, the From header
was NOT filtered, at least for that particular post.

So, what can we make of this. Sometimes the From header is filtered
and sometimes it is not?

You are correct. This page also indicates that void does support From
headers:
http://www.bananasplit.info/echolot/from.html

What we can conclude from this is that void isn't processing messages in
accordance with its remailer-conf. Most likely, Mixmaster hasn't been
compiled with PCRE.

Isn't that a little obvious? Ok maybe not in this instance. Void did
indeed allow from headers at one time but has since disallowed them.
If a remailer runs an echolot pinger the ones supporting the from header
are listed. Example: http://www.aarg.net/remailer/ scroll to the bottom and
see:
From Header Lines
A summary of From Headers each remailer uses has also been compiled. It
also lists which remailers allow setting the From: Header.

Italy, I believe, is the only one without a header or footer, then you have
bigapple, frell, hastio, and panta (who requires hashcash) there may or may
not be others.
Here is more information than you could shake a stick at.

This list is not complete, see google or something, if this ain't enough.

Sorry for the mistake but as BiKiKii Admin pointed out, I believe I'm
confused with Userbeam. Anyway, this was posted with Italy as exit and the
from header rocks.

I got currious and inspected the 3b2 source code of mixmaster. In pool.c
line 654 HDRFILTER is read (the file with the filters). In line 684 this
code:

~ if (doblock(line, filter, 1) == -1)
~ goto end;
~ if (bufileft(line, "from:"))
~ from = 1;

is called. doblock() compares the whole header.blk file (all rules) with
the current line that it is processing. If a match is found the goto end
instruction makes sure that the next line is never processed. The
variable 'from' will not become 1, which in turns ensures that on line 509:

~ err = filtermsg(m);
~ if (err == 1)
~ userfrom = 1, err = 0;

userfrom does not get set. And in line 531:

~ if (!userfrom)
~ fprintf(f, "From: %s\n", ANONNAME);

The anonname of the remailer gets set if the From line was not set in
the function filtermsg() [see above].

I am not sure yet how remailers that allow nicks, but no e-mail address
actually work. The code probably also is in pool.c.

That sure was fun,
Thomas

(P.S. I funny thing is that on
<http://stats.melontraffickers.com/from.html>, void is listed in two
lines as:
void Anonymous <nobody@void.hn.org> cpunk-clear, cpunk-dsa
void Echolot Pinger <pinger@stats.melontraffickers.com> mix
So maybe the Mix allows from lines, while the cypherpunk part does uses
a different header.blk file. The remailer-conf thus filters the /^From/
header)
