Now that hashcash v1 is starting to appear, what is going to happen to
those still using v0.x? will gateways continue to honor v0.x tokens?
i use the windows gui minter HCW.EXE, can IT be made to mint v1 tokens?
if not, will there be a new version soon?
why HCW.EXE? easy...speed.
it can make a 27 bit panta token in about 30-50 minutes each.
panta's version takes 3 hours on the same machine.

Yes, old tokens are still valid.

Ask Richard, he made the GUI

Are you talking about the new version ? Download the Panta v1 minter, its
using the optimized hashcash minter from adam back. (8 times faster)
I made my minter in part because I wanted to mint tokens in the background.
As I still want to be able to use my computer when it mints tokens the
hashcash.exe is executed with IDLE priority, i.e. it only get CPU time when
no other processes want it.
This of course makes it slower !
I really should make the process priority user-defineable.
I will try to do it this weekend, but I am away, so it could take until
next week.
Cheers, and thanks for the inspiration,

Sorry to say, I doubt it. With every release of adams code becomes more
incompatible with windows. I feel a little shafted since I put a lot of
work into HCW. Now it is of little use.
It sounds like panta's hashcash client should be pretty good these
days. Emperor noted that panta's was faster. That was a while back.
Probably it works even better now.

Jonathan Morton works with Adam Back to get it to compiler under MingW
C, I tried with Borland C++ 5.5, but got two errors from libaries it was
missing (UTC time zone and some Random stuff).
There also are windows binaries now, I myself use
hashcash-1.08-win32-exe.zip from http://hashcash.org/binaries/win32/. It
has problems minting on some processors (486, Pentium I), but I believe
hashcash 1.09 will be released soon.

Jonathan made the above hashcash client use MMX instructions, which on
my computer is about 60% faster than non-MMX. It is just that the MMX
detection routines crash my older 486dx2..

ok... i've got the source for your hcw.exe from your site a while back.
what do i need to do to get it to compile with msvc 6 or cygwin?

Sorry, you need Borland CBuilder v1. HCW uses Borland's vcl
(gui) library.

The windows binaries are, as far as I know, console app(s). When
I was working with Adam--in the beginning--his code could be
compiled into a console app. Getting the code to compile in a
gui app was a different matter.

I'm sure panta's hcgui will work fine for HashCash users. He
seems to be improving it regularly.

Thanks for that, I do what I can.
Although I do not use quicksilver I am convinced it is an important piece
of software in the community.
Keep up the good work,

Could I ask a favor of you? Since you have MSVC 6 and Cygwin installed and
know how to use
them would you take a stab at compiling the latest Mixmaster source for us
Windows users?
Source is here:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/...tar.gz?download
Thanks.

I forgot about that. I am just an old-school ANSI C and 8086 Assembly
programmer, I think I will read some books about Java and ANSI C++ the
next couple of years and I hope I can then be of better help :-(

Last thing I read about it in the group, HCW was considerably slower
than hashcash-1.08-win32-exe. Speed is very important.
I have a question for you about GUI programming, isn't Mixmaster also a
Console app? Couldn't you fire up hashcash-1.08-win32-exe for minting
when you fire up a mail2news template, and retrieve the token when the
user presses send? Just trying to be constructive here, I have no idea
on how to actually do this..
#include <stdlib.h>
void main(void)
{
~ system(
~ "hashcash -X -mb24 -e28d -a-3d"
~ " mail2news-hashcash@bananasplit.info"
~ " >token.txt");
}
As I am typing this I suddenly realize that you use a DLL with
mixmaster. I really wouldn't know the difference between a GUI and a
console app.. I guess a GUI app uses something else than int main(int
argc, char *argv[]){exit(0)}?!

Yes, I heard the same, but someone on my mailing list said it
took panta's program a couple hours to create a 27 bit token and
hcw took 30 minutes.

Yes, if a person were to use a mail2news then the final
destination would be known in advance--unlike a randomly
selected exit remailer. What you suggest could be done. It could
also just grab a token from the token database. But it is just
not something I want to support. Possibly in the future. It is a
great flood countermeasure but I have serious concerns about the
unfairly high toll it takes on older/slower computers. It isn't
fair, but it isn't a problem now since the great majority of
remailers and most mail2news gateways are free.
