Can someone recommend a somewhat anonymous SMTP server in the US with a
reasonable monthly or annual fee? I don't care about over-the-top
privacy matters -- I just want to send email that does not contain my IP
address. Also, the service would be used to send mail from my laptop
computer when traveling.

If you can set up privoxy, you can then get an account at yahoo.com or
fastmail.fm, and send mail using them, and going through privoxy.

The IP they include in the headers will be whatever proxy you are going
through when you send the message.

Yes, I know how to do that, but I was hoping to find a regular SMTP
service. I think I found one for $10 per month, which I may try. If
there is one cheaper, I'd be interested. I can get a fully hosted web
account with multiple email addresses for $5 per month!

Cotse has tons of features, including regular smtp, and costs $6 / month.
I don't know if it removes your ip, but Steve Gielda, the owner, hangs
around here and will probably let us know.
