rbtor going down - ISP problems!!!!!

| Ok, so I got into trouble with my ISP for operating a re-mailer. They consider
it a server which is outside of the TOS of the agreement.
They were polite, but asked I shut it down as soon a convenient. I have to
oblige them as they are the only cable Internet provider I can choose.
Darn it, just when it seemed to be operating OK.
Sorry all. I'll try to figure something else out. I know a lot more now than
when I started.
Dingo had been showing my stats at 100%
http://dingo.1hwy.com/Dingorlist2.html
http://dingo.1hwy.com/Dingomlist2.html
Sorry all. I think I had been processing nearly 10,000 messages a day or more
if you include stats pings. Not bad for a beginning re-mailer. Hope all is
well with all. May everyone be happy and healthy and my best wishes.
Sorry, I just have to go before I wind up in a deep pile of doo doo.
Regards all,

That's too bad. Have you considered getting dsl? Around here we have
one cable company and about 50 companies offering dsl, so I assume you
have a good choice as well. Some of them are like your cable outfit and
won't permit servers, but there are plenty that do.
Our dsl is about $25 / month not counting rental of the modem, and
delivers a *steady* 2500 kilobits down and 600 kilobits up.
That's not as fast as cable, but plenty fast enough for me, and the cable
can go into the cellar as far as speed is concerned, depending on how many
users are on at a given time; our dsl almost never varies more than a
little from the speeds I mentioned.

Did you speak to a real human being, or is this all by email?

You seem to be a resourceful guy. Hopefully you can work something out
soon, for a service such as the one you've offered for a short time has
been valuable and regarded.
Thanks.

I am working on the details of a commercial account with them. I have spoken
with their rep and will meet with him tomorrow. Hopefully, we can arrive at
reasonable terms. By communications via E-mail and phone, we get along well. I
checked into a DSL account. For a static business IP it is the same price as
cable, but slower. I'll try the cable option first. To be truthful, the cable
option for commercial offers a higher bandwidth than my 3.5 that I have now.
I think we will work it out. A couple of "good old boys" can do things. I just
happen to have a passion for re-mailers. I was around when RProcess spoke. The
Stray Cat was my Mentor.
I'll be back again. I won't give up on the 12 years that re-mailer volunteers
had helped me. I owe that back to the community. Now that I can repay them,
I'll do what I can. I owe them big time. I expect the costs to be minimal,
about $80 or so a month or "that is what they quoted". Fortunately, that is
not out of he realm of reasonable for what I owe the re-mailer community.
Thanks for caring. That means more to me than anything. People like yourself
are the driving force that pushes me. I'll Git-R-Done because of caring people
like you.
Regards,

Thank you so very much. I will do something. I owe the re-mailer community a
lot.
People like you, that care, are the ones that encourage me to push forward.
See my other post.
Thanks for caring. It is very much appreciated.
Oh, it was by telephone. They were very nice about it. I broke the TOS, they
just cautioned me about it in a very pleasant way. Since they were so nice, I
am bound to reciprocate.
The new service I hope to offer will be more reliable. The darn constant
updates to Windows that requires a reboot or to the firewall security center
requiring a reboot means I might lose mail. I am exploring options of someone
holding incoming mail if a reboot is needed. That way I won't miss anything. I
am striving for 100% stats. I'll do the best I can do for the users of the
re-mailer community. When you send mail through me, it is a responsibility
that I don't take lightly. I look at myself as a common carrier, just like the
postal service. I don't care what the mail is, but it must get through.
Again, thanks for your kind words.
My warmest regards,
admin_rbtor

That's a bit of a bummer, first the blacklist, now this. At least they
communicated with you and didn't just pull the pin without warning. I
certainly hope you can get it sorted and have rbtor back on line
shortly. All the best.

I wouldn't worry about that. All sending SMTP servers should retry on a
failed connection, so at most the mail would be delayed. Plus, a reboot
shouldn't take more than a minute or so anyhow.

Dear Dingo
When I come back on line, I'll ask you first to list me in your stats. I hope
you will do me the honor. I have trusted you for years. That trust remains
unbroken with me.
Over the years I have found you cautious and trustworthy. I may come back
under a different name, but I hope you will consider me.
Your pages are still in my stats for JBN as they have been since 4 to 5 years
ago. I enjoyed your webpage on the evolution of Dingo. I got a kick out of the
hotpop problems. (sorry) I know you were trying hard. I also noticed you moved
up in the world from Mercury. Any reason why?
Trust!!!! Period. You have earned it.
My warmest regards to you in particular,
You will always remain a most trusted source.

Well, it was my own fault I guess. I broke the TOS. They were kind enough to
be very polite about it.
I'll get it right. I have a lot to learn. The commercial rep I am dealing with
isn't a spring chicken either. I trust him to teach me some of the ropes.
By the way, you have a great service. One to be admired. May offer a tip of my
hat to you Sir!

Maybe I'm just being anal about this, but I have a REAL hard time accepting a
message like this as legit when it is not PGP signed by the adminkey.
Rbtor Admin, would you mind please re-issuing this announcement with
your pgp signature on it to validate that it's really you and not
just a remailer-hater trying to skunk a new operator.
If this is true, then I'm of course sorry to see you going down, 35 is just
too few remailers. I remember when there way 52 not all that long ago.
If I had the resources I'd start one up myself, alas I have no pc to spare
and dialup at that.

True, but I got carried away with the instructions set forth by R Process.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, depends on how you look at it, I set it up so
that only I can restart it. I didn't follow all of his suggestions for
security, (shorter latency) but most. Everything is heavily password
protected.
On a reboot, only I can restart it. Problems come in because I use a USB KVM
switch to switch between the primary computer and the server. When a reboot of
the server is required, it plays heck with the USB KVN switch. Don't know why,
but it doesn't want to let me access the server. I have to plug in a spare
keyboard and mouse and switch the flat panel manually. Do a reboot, shut
everything down and do a total restart. A real P in the neck.
I have to travel with my work. So I can be out of town for a few days. I set
all the updates to wait until I return and manually install them. Still, it
seems to me, if I shut down Mercury for just a few minutes, I lose mail.
The only reason that makes me believe that is after I start back up and tell
Reliable to do manual pop, nothing is there. Normally for a minute or 2, if
I am working on the config for Reliable, as soon as I enable it again, it
grabs 10 or more messages.
Just leaves me with a queasy feeling that I lost mail. Just not sure. I would
rather know that couldn't happen.
Regards,

Good luck.
PGP signing the announcement would have been good.
However it is apparent you have "pulled the plug".

I guess I got too caught up in trying to work out alternatives. You're
right of course. I just didn't think about it.
By the way, thanks for listing me on your news pages. I thought that was a
very nice thing and I appreciated it. The news pages are a very nice touch.
I know it takes time and effort on your part. Thanks!!!
I'll just have to try harder.
My sincere regards,
admin_rbtor

I was trying to speed things up so I could handle some flooding that was
going on at the time. I was also trying to figure out how to implement TLS
on a Windows system. MDaemon offered a very solid program, TLS, and someone
I could complain to if it didn't work right.
It's not free, but it's also not too terribly expensive, either. It does a
good job, and I've been very happy with it. I would recommend it if you
were looking for a low cost alternative to Mercury.

You could always:
1) Go middleman. Your ISP would never know (i.e. never be able
to trace any messages back to you).
2) Send all your outgoing mail via another annoymizing service
(eg COTSE). Remailers have been run like this in the past.

The retry swchedules for most SMTP servers lasts for a week!
I never use a keyboard/mouse/screen on my server. Use VNC (over
an SSH tunnel if you must have the best security).

1) You shouldn't ever lose mail. If your machine is down, the
remote sending machine should retry later. If your machine goes
down before the SMTP session officially finishes, the sending
machine (yours or theirs) should retry later.
2) If you are still worried, investigate "secondary MX".
