amigo's mail2news gateway (mail2news@remailer.org.uk) is
undergoing further testing. Feel free to try it out. It has
excellent connectivity with major usenet providers. Be warned it
may go down with little or no notice.
IT IS A MAIL2NEWS GATEWAY. IT IS NOT AN ANONYMOUS POSTING
SERVICE.
At present
1) Received: headers are posted. I am trying to work out a way
of removing them and inserting the IP address as an NNTP-Posting-
Host: header instead. Unfortunately my PERL sucks.
2) "X-No-Archive: Yes" is the default. It will be added to all
posts unless "X-No-Archive: No" is specified.
If you want to be anonymous, use a remailer to post the message
onwards to a mail2news gateway. Although amigo is a middleman
remailer, amigo will post directly to it's own mail2news gateway.

In my initial test I found that not to be the case. It was hopped.

Demon mail2news posts Received headers too, so it's not a problem.
If you find a way of removing them I'm not sure of the benefit of
inserting the IP as an NNTP-Posting-Host. Even normal news servers
don't add IP addresses to headers these days.

Why? Surely it should be up to the person whether they want their
message archived or not. It's usually an opt-in rather than an opt-out.

Perhaps someone can tell me the correct string to put in
dest.alw so that Mixmaster will accept messages to any newsgroup
(but preferably will block it if there are more than 4)?

The scripts are VERY SIMPLE. I saw some of the ones that are in
use elsewhere and nearly had a heart attack. Mine would print
out on a side of A4 paper in 10 point font. And I didn't do much
writing myself, I stole most of it from code that's already on
the net.
It requires the use of INN (under Linux) as the news server. If
you use Windows, DNEWS is an option for you, but the mail2news
that comes with that has a niggling problem of adding a space to
the start of the subject line (causing the subject to change
when following up).
Mail me for more information and let me know exactly what you
want.

Have you tried Panta's m2n mod for Reliable? From Panta's help dialog
"All you have to do is to set up a mailbox called mail2news@your-
remailer.com and route email arriving at that address into your remailers
mailbox. You need a working NNTP setup, as messages arriving at the m2news
address are converted into a Anon-Post-To message."
I need to make a couple changes to my setup for it to work (I will get
around to it one day) but if you're using Mercury I'm pretty sure it
should be fine as is.

If I use my regular NNTP service Giganews, is there a way to filter out
some of the message headers in Reliable before it posts?
Many thanks!!!

Not to my knowledge. It should be posted as your standard remailer post,
similar to this one. What headers do you want to drop?

Hi !

The Panta Mail2News mod will only pass these headers on:
If LCase(Left(a, 10)) = "x-hashcash" Then Dst = Dst + a + vbCrLf
If LCase(Left(a, 7)) = "subject" Then Dst = Dst + a + vbCrLf
If LCase(Left(a, 4)) = "date" Then Dst = Dst + a + vbCrLf
If LCase(Left(a, 9)) = "reference" Then Dst = Dst + a + vbCrLf
If LCase(Left(a, 11)) = "x-noarchive" Then Dst = Dst + a + vbCrLf
If LCase(Left(a, 10)) = "message-id" Then Dst = Dst + a + vbCrLf
All other headers will be dropped.
Please see my other post too, I just released a new version with some
bugfixes.
Cheers,

I have a very basic script I wrote for mail2news using inn avaliable
here if you are interested:
http://www.cotse.net/mail2news.pl.txt
I haven't even looked at it since 2004, but it uses PERL with a mod, it
drops all headers but specifically named. Hack away at it and turn it
into whatever you want.

Oh yeah, I don't know if I'd recommend using it in it's default form
because it has no filtering. I had started it with the intention of
adding a lot more features, including dupe check, throttles, and
filters, but got tied up in other things (at that time the mixmaster web
interface I released) and never finished it. Maybe I'll take it on
again in the future when I have some free time. But right now the code
could be useful to give yourself some ideas if you have a perl
background.

It most definitely should be !
I have messed up my source tree in an attempt to get a cvs system running
here.
Thanks for pointing it out.
Fixed in new binary.

It's working well. A couple of things I've noticed are your Received
header sometimes doesn't say Received, but is just a blank space. It
looks weird. Look in the headers of your post that I'm replying to and
you'll see what I mean.
You claim this is a mail2news server and not an anonymous service, but
the Organization header says "Anonymous Posting Service". Maybe remove
that header completely or change it.
Other than that it seems very fast and messages sent through it have
appeared on all the news servers I have access to.

Not quite sure I follow - the headers on my message, here, look
like this:

The Organization header is only added if not present. I've
altered it now though, to "unknown".

Thanks for the testing. Messages are posted to the newsserver in
realtime and I have some pretty top notch peering around the
world so distribution should be almost instantaneous.

I agree. The information gleaned from the Received headers are useless
when a remailer is used, and amigo's clear that the mail2news is *not* an
anonymizing service in itself. I guess things would look cleaner if they
were removed, but it's no big deal.

I don't have a problem with No Archive being the default, either. Amigo
may have his own reasons for inserting it, and thus I view it as just a
characteristic of using the gateway. Remember the Freedom gateway used to
add a disclaimer. Same thing, IMO, a choice of the operator.
>
> Thanks for the new service! There are never enough mail2news servers.
No there are not. I hope the amigo gateway stays up for good. My testing
has shown that at this time it is the champion as far as having the best
results with each exit remailer.

I had similar problems with a script I wrote to post mailing list
messages to local.list.foo newsgroups. The problem for me was the
multi-line nature of the Received headers. I now strip any header lines
that begin with whitespace before trying to post them.

This is the reason I used the Email-Simple mod, it's far easier to work
with multi-line headers in PERL with it. Anyone working with a Perl
mail2news gate can take a look at http://www.cotse.net/mail2news.pl.txt
for a basic mail2news example using it if you want.
That script can be made even smaller fairly easily, not sure what I was
thinking using mult print lines and writing the file then rereading it
in, other than it was quick and dirty at the time. As for the writing
and rereading, I must have had a reason, though damned if I can remember
why I chose disk i/o rather than work all in mem.

Ah well - I know it left here OK because I read mail from a
different news server (another one of mine) and I read it fine.
It's also stored fine at google. Maybe some servers strip it,
maybe it's one of the servers in the transit 9which will be
different every time) or maybe it's your news client.
Doesn't really matter anyway - only reason I want it is in case
of usenet abuse. Then I can point the finger elsewhere, or if
(hopefully not) it becomes necessary, even bar certain IPs from
using the gateway. I will try working on creating an NNTP-
Posting-Host: header from the information in the Received header
when I get the time.
