First, what PGP to use? I couldn't install pgp9 beta, but I
found
an old version of 6.5.8 that I got installed. Now my problem
is just
understanding the nym.alias.net help file. I have spent hours
going
over this, and I'm afraid I need my hand held. I don't like to
give
up and can most always bull my way through to get results.
Problem
with that is not being aware enough of security implications or
effectiveness. I'll go back over it, trying to get it, but is
there some simpler help out there? Also, which remailers can I
use
as the last in a chain that will let me use an alias in the
from:
header?
Thank you for reading.

You could use PGP 8.1 with QS. GnuPG x.x won't work with it though. Just
download the freeware version from <http://www.pgp.com>.

What you basically need for a nym is a PGP key (n.a.n. only accepts
version '3' RSA keys, you could perhaps perhaps create one with PGP
2.6.3i from <http://www.pgpi.org> with the commands 'pgp -kg 1024' and
'pgp -kxa username exportfile secring.pgp').

Then you need a reply-block that ends somewhere (your e-mail address or
perhaps alt.anonymous.messages).

Then you need to set some options like indicated in the nan help file.
Think with each option if you want it set on or off. I once setup a (low
security) nym with my real ID's pgp key, so I had the option 'fingerkey'
disabled.

With nan you should receive a confirmation request through your reply
block which you must reply to get get your nym there activated.

You might want to use a mixmaster chain to communicate with the nym
server otherwise it would be clear to an observer at your ISP that you
are sending data to the nym server (combined with the list of new nyms
that gets posted here daily by NymFinder).

You might also want to use directives like 'Encrypt-Key', 'Cutmarks',
'Remix-To' and 'Latent-Time' in your reply block but they are not
manditory.

There might be better choices for your nym server as nan tends to have a
lot of downtime, but maybe the other regulars can suggest a solid nym
server that they like to use for this.

nan has been around for the longest time here of all nym servers. They
have never changed their keys though, so that might be considered as a
bad thing.

Thomas
