Author running a mail server if the isp blocks port 25

We'll be switching to a new isp, which blocks port 25.

I'm running the mercury mail server for use with the parsifal
remailer, using end-to-end smtp, i.e., the outgoing mail
connects directly to the machine on the other end.

If the isp blocks port 25, is it impossible to send mail using
the mail server, or is there some workaround?

You'll have to send mail out through your new isp's smtp server
instead of directly. No, there is no way of sending mail end-to-end
if you can't connect through port 25.

Shouldn't make a difference though as long as your isp's smtp server
doesn't rate limit you or anything.

Thanks, I figured that was the situation, but wasn't sure.

I'm not too comfortable sending last-hop remailer messages through my
isp's server, so I'll have to consider what to do.

Do any other last-hop remailer operators use their isp's smtp server?
Had any problems?

Italy Anonymous Remailer

Re-post, apologies if it causes duplication - the first one (via
austria as exit and lcs/dizum as mail2news, strangely never
arrived).

Workarounds:

Host your own mailserver outside the ISP's network (i.e. a
colocated server in a datacentre) and send the mail to that
using a different port or a VPN tunnel, and from there onward to
the destination. But if you are going to do that, you may as
well just host the remailer on the colocated box.

You can probably use STARTTLS/SSL to transfer mail on ports
465/587. Only useful for (some) inter-remailer traffic not for
any exit traffic. For the rest of the mail you'll have to use
the ISP's mail server.

Go middleman, or get a different ISP, if it really bothers you.
