investigation showed that the reason is when mixminion tries to update-servers it's getting an http error 404

Try '-D no' to run without downloading a directory.
trying to load http://mixminion.net in web browser gets the Seul.org home page...
anybody got a clue about that?
meanwhile, i'm off to modify the gui so that it does not do update-servers unless explicitly asked to.

The next release of Mixminion will have a built-in pinger so that
clients can obtain keys and reliability stats from lots of different
locations. I belive Nick is hoping to get this release out in the next
few months.

=46or those of us who haven't kept up, can somebody fill in the story
about mixminion vs the tor routers?
=46rom what I have seen here, the impression I have is that tor has
taken over the functions that mixminion was going to perform, and that
the development gurus have stopped work on mixminion to get involved
with tor.
That is probably way off base, even if it is a little true, but I
would be interested in getting a clearer picture.

Tor and Mixminion are very different things.
Tor is a low-latency anonymous routing service. It provides good
anonymity for a wide variety of services and protocols.
Mixminion is an anonymous email service (like Mixmaster). Because mail
doesn't require near real-time delivery, Mixminion can use longer
latency than Tor. With this longer latency comes really strong
anonymity.
There are quite a few differences between Mixmaster and Mixminion.
Probably this most significant are:
* Mixminion clients and servers talk to eachother using a dedicated
protocol MMTPS whilst Mixmaster uses standard SMTP.
* Mixminion contains reply-block functionality to enable anonymous
replies. Unlike Type-I reply blocks, these are only valid once,
(Single Use Reply Blocks - SURBS)
Mixminion development has been delayed whilst Tor is going through it's
Alpha phases. Hopefully there will be some more work on it soon,
although nearly all the work is being done by Nick Matthewson
single-handedly so as you can image he's a pretty busy guy right now.

that turned out to be easy (working in win98/MsDos anyway)
you need to make strings for the doublequote char and the asterisk
qt = Chr$(34)
ast = Chr$(42)
then build the command line to feed mixminion...
cmd = " send -D no --subject=" + qt + subject + qt + " --from=" + qt + from_addr + qt + " -t " + qt + dest + qt + " -i " + qt + "c:\mixminion\tmsg.txt" + qt + " -P " + qt + ast + hops + qt + " --config=" + qt + "c:\mixminion\mixminionrc" + qt

Mixminion allows nym replies in the future, but Mixmaster is better
right now. It has been in 'beta' for a longer time and there is probably
more anonymous traffic for it on the network. It just does the job when
you don't need to get back a reply! If you want to get a reply back,
Mixmaster sucks big time :-(

That doesn't do much good if you can't download the client in the first
place because mixminion.net is down! I wouldn't trust a client I got
elsewhere unless I had some relevant keys on my keyring already that I
trusted..

I am not sure that would work (I know pretty much everything about MS
DOS and I can't make sense of this except that it looks like Basic).
Anyways, if you use the nix binaries (on the nix operating system) you
will be fine.. It will probably be fixed soon in the mixminion binaries
for windows (but IIRC it might take some work)..

I coded assembly for it and read through Ralph Browns interrupt list and
stuff. I must admit that my knowledge stops when it comes to extended
memory drivers, but I know all there is to know about e.g. batch files.
I even wrote a driver for config.sys once.. I coded lots of things back
in the old days.. <http://home.hccnet.nl/t.j.boschloo/netsafer> must
have been my latest endeavor.
I also cracked loads of video games in the past. That also helped to get
a grip on MS-DOS. I can post you the sources of e.g. my Starcontrol II
crack if you want me to?! I am very proud of that one and it took me a
long time and several attempts to work.

Ah but you see, it DOES work! I'm using it to post this msg. and yes,
it's Basic.. Visual Basic, Same thing JBN and Reliable are written in.

I started this project because of two things.
The closest thing I've got to *nix is Cygwin.
Frankly, I got tired of doing it on the command line. It was slow, klunky
and made replies difficult. using a batch file and a temp message file helped,
but putting together a GUI frontend was really the ticket.
Once I've got it refined some more, I'll be putting it out where others can
check it out and use it if they like it.
