WARNING: Use of Parsifal Remailer
|
|
|
|
Anyone who uses Parsifal remailer as a final hop to post
to Usenet is advised to check an update to the remailer
config file BEFORE every use. If you do not you may find
that the operator has made some change which adversely
affects you.
For example, I made a post which contained soc.culture.usa
as one of the newsgroups. As of the previous day that
NG was not on the parsifal restricted list. However, when
the post appeared it was defaced by changing the
from-line to FAKE NAME and adding a very long top
disclaimer stating that the poster is probably an abuser.
Nothing in the content of the post could even remotely be
considered abuse by any rational person. I checked
the config for Parsifal just now and I see that the news-
ground has now been added to the restricted list.
It's too bad that the admin is so flakey since we need
exit remailers that allow a custom nick. If you do use
Parsifal be prepared for the unexpected to happen.

Damn, that was fast! Now that eelbash has learned how to torture some
results out of Visual Basic, he can XXXX things up faster than ever!
In fact, his ability to mangle, deface, and generally XXXX up your posts is
now restricted only by the speed of his processor chip!

I added soc.culture.usa today to the remailer-conf file. I think it
was added there at the same time I added it to the file that causes
the disclaimer to appear. If I did not, I apologize; I try to keep
the remailer-conf file uptodate regarding remailer changes.
> Nothing in the content of the post could even remotely be
> considered abuse by any rational person.
It's not an individual post that is the reason for the disclaimer,
it's because of complaints from a newsgroup's regulars of abuse
coming through the remailer.
And keep in mind that if the user is crossposting to several
newsgroups, and one of the newsgroups is on the disclaimer list, the
disclaimer will appear in all of the newsgroups he posted to. There
is no way I can put it in just the newsgroup it was intended for -
well, maybe I could, but that would screw up the threading.

If you want to get around the blocking and the disclaimers, and
ensure that your custom 'from' header appears, send me a key that you
make up, and use it with messages that use Parsifal as the last-hop
remailer. I'd rather use hashcash to do this, but can't get it to
work yet. I'll add the instructions to the remailer-conf / help
files, but here are the instructions:
Make up a 4-character key. Send it to admin@parsifal.ath.cx, using
parsifal as the last remailer to keep it encrypted until it gets
here.
When you send a message to one of the blocked newsgroups, or
one that has a disclaimer, make the key part of the subject, in
parentheses.
For example, if your key is 1234, then your subject would be
something like this:
Subject: my comments on whatever the topic is.
The (1234) will be removed before the message is sent out.

Damn, I screwed up a key sentence. The instructions should read this
way:
Make up a 4-character key. Send it to admin@parsifal.ath.cx, using
parsifal as the last remailer to keep it encrypted until it gets
here.
When you send a message to one of the blocked newsgroups, or

parentheses.
For example, if your key is 1234, then your subject would be
something like this:
Subject: (1234)my comments on whatever the topic is.
So (1234) must begin the Subject line.
The (1234) will be removed before the message is sent out.

I have a better Idea.
anyone who is willing to use parsifal should simply edit the capstring to
include 'middle', that solves all the problems presented by the use of
parsifal as an exit machine.
better still not to use it.

Exactly how do you think hashcash will help you to control
content posted through the remailer? I must say that a
suspicious person might think that your real motive in this
is to try to devise some way to connect a post to a unique
sender or to come up with something that will make traffic
analysis easier.

If I can determine that Reliable had found the hashcash token valid,
then the message can be posted without disclaimer, with a custom from
header; it can be posted to a newsgroup that is normally blocked.

If you think that is the real motive, tell us how hashcash helps
accomplish it.

You mean "eelbash", no wait... "bog" no "bogg"... no, wait, "greatwall"..
no, that can't be it.. too many letters in the remailer name, and no remop
smarter than a carrot would make THAT mistake.
You must mean "cheshire"..no, no, I know it starts with a "C"... "congo"!
No, that doesnt work, either.
Maybe something mystical...."asmodeus". Nope, that right, we've gone
international now.. "parsifal" Oooooh, what a clever remop! Name your
remailer after a Wagnerian opera, no one would ever think he was:
Reading their posts
Monitoring their mail
Editing their posts
Defacing their posts with 12-line disclaimers
STILL begging people to send him their private keys
STILL unable to grasp "partitioning attack"
Stupid as a vegetable, or law enforcement? or BOTH?
