On Wednesday UK is putting forward a 10-point plan, which includes:
* Forcing phone companies and internet service providers across
* Europe to keep all records of calls, text messages and e-mails

Terrorist attacks always seem to cause this kind of reaction. No
mention yet of anonymising and encryption services, but probably only a
matter of time.

Frosty Madness

2005-07-13, 7:46 am

The UK becomes more like China with each passing month, ID cards, punishment
without conviction, surveillance...

New Labour is shameless in its ability to rush through poorly drafted, ill
conceived legislation all in the name of "The War on Terror."

News flash - wars on abstract nouns can't be won. Terrorists cannot reduce
our civil liberties, they rely on the Government to do it for them.

Hello,

That is quite interesting about the mobile phones. The press must be well
behind the times as mobile companies have kept records of which IMEI numbers
are associated with which phone and who has called it, and who the user has
called - also which other phones the SIM card has been used in. They also
keep every single text message and picture message going back years.
Certainly back to 1995 anyway. This can be cross referenced with the
position of each phone.
I have seen this being used as evidence in some trials I went to watch when
i was studying a year or two ago. The mobile phone companies will only
release the info if there is a thing called a "production order" which is
obtained after a private court hearing.

So it is already being done, without your knowledge and permission. That's
why you can be very easily tied own to using stolen mobiles for example. It
makes me wonder if companies will not block them incase they lose revenue!

Sometimes it can be a good thing as you would be able to give a convincing
story that you were in a different place if accused of something. I know
you could always give your phone to someone else!!

With the exception of text messages and pictures,
the logs only reflect 1) the originating phone #, 2) the
location of the originating phone, 3) the number being
called, 4) the length of time of the call, 5) the location
of the person being called.

The cryptophone is for protection against wiretapping,
not monitoring of use. There are no logs kept for
speech. Well, none that they will talk about.

Correct, it is just like PGP. Not like Mixmaster.
