A quick (Debian) linux question - Pls

I know this is the wrong forum to be asking
general linux questions but... I'm setting up
the dedicated machine for the moose remailer
and I've opted for Debian Linux 3.1 ('sarge').
After checking out the various options (and
handling charges) to get hold of the 14
distribution CDs, I've ended up with the
2 DVD's instead. My problem now is that my
DVD drive is toast so I'm needing to use a
buddy's DVD drive till I find a good deal on
one. Before I ask him to pull it out of his
machine and put it into my remailer box, I was
wondering if I could simply bring my harddrive
over to his place instead and install a
basic setup on there and then just pop it into
the remailer box all ready to go (like pre-98
windows used to let you do).
Also.. Is there a way for me to convert the
2 DVDs into the 14 CDs myself?
Thanks for any advice.

Hi Moose,
You really don't need those DVD's or even CD's. Assuming your network
connection is better than dialup, all you need is CD1.
One of the nice things about Debian is that the installation is minimal;
you get just enough to get a system up and running. After that you just
use tools like apt-get to install the additional components you need.
To save you having to download the whole of CD1, there is also a Network
Installation CD that is about 180MB that you can get to from here:
http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/
Best to decide in advance if you want Sarge (stable) or Etch (testing).
Stable is good at the moment as it's quite new, but in 12 months time it
can get frustrating.

| You could as well just download the netinstall CD. It allows you to
download only the packages you need.
