Command-line mixmaster as client on linux.
|
|
|
| Using mixmaster v3.x installed as client only. Is there anything
incorrect in the example below? (Given that the example m2n &
remailers are up & functioning) Sendmail & mix.cfg set-up and
working correctly.
One creates a message like this & saves it as test.txt.
=========================== <-not included, of course.
To: mail2news@dizum.com
From: <blank>
Subject: Some subject.
Newsgroups: alt.test
X-No-Archive: yes
First line of text.
Second line of text.
=========================== <-not included, of course.
Then pipe the saved file above to mixmaster like so:
mixmaster -c 1 -l austria,dizum,borked <tmp/test.txt
Right?
Also, I installed mixmaster 3.x from the source tar.gz at sourceforge.net
as a client on my linux box. I have to preface the mixmaster command
with ./ otherwise it won't run. Is this normal/okay? When I ran debian &
used the package manager to install from a .deb, I could just type the
mixmaster command w/o prefacing it with ./ But that was a while ago,
so I may not be remembering correctly. (heh)

I suggest you use a post directive for Usenet, like this:-
mixmaster --post --post-to="alt.test" --subject="Testing" /tmp/test.txt
For email:-
mixmaster --to="foo@invalid.com" --subject="Testing" /tmp/test

You remembered correctly.
When you install the package, the mixmaster binary goes in /usr/bin
which is in your path. When you install it from source, it goes
wherever you choose to put it. The ./ prefix means "look in my current
directory". You could create a symbolic link to the binary in
/usr/local/bin but you might run into problems with write permissions to
the pool dir if you try and run it from another user account.

| I would like to run mixmaster, but cannot figure out how to send using my
ISP, and couldn't figure out postfix either.
Slackware 11, dialup.
Any advice on how to config either one would be appreciated.

I'm currently running PClinuxOS on a spare box. But here's what I
did for running just the client side:
Installed Sendmail (It didn't ask me for any settings, so I didn't go
hunting for any (G))
Downloaded mixmaster-3.0rc1.tar.gz from sourceforge.net, extracted
it, cd 'd into to the directory, and ran ./Install. Accepted the defaults.
Then I edited the mix.cfg file. I did add these:
CLIENTAUTOFLUSH
SMTPRELAY smtp.yourmailservernamehere.com
SMTPUSERNAME username
SMTPPASSWORD yourpasswd
Read the file "mixmaster.1" for more info. If you're like me you'll find
it a tad vague but, hey, what do you expect for free. (G)
I'm a noob at this, but I hope it helps you some.

Thanks
Yes, it tells me I wasn't too far wrong. Will try Sendmail instead of
postfix, and see what happens.

NO! If you're using SMTPRELAY you don't need sendmail or postfix: the message
is being sent from mixmaster directly via your ISP's smtp mail server.

Good.
But I'm still trying to find out how to update stats and keys; have the
urls (http://www.noreply.org/echolot/) but no idea how to use them.
The only setup info found is
http://linux.derkeiler.com/Newsgrou...05-10/0639.html
which is both obsolete and incomplete.
We who are not "l33t" really need a good tutorial for mixmaster in linux.

(smacks forehead) Well that makes sense ..err.. now. (G)
Thanks for that bit of info!
I wonder what leaving the SENDMAIL line uncommented in the
mix.cfg has been doing all this time? Hopefully, nothing evil :/
Dang I wish I could google-up an informative guide.

I did an: mixmaster - -update-pinger-list
And then: mixmaster - -update-stats=banana
Replace banana w/ any source from the allpingers file.
You can always just run mixmaster at the prompt by itself and
use its ncurses(sp) interface. That pretty easy.
I'm just trying to learn how to do stuff at the command prompt
so I can eventually write a nice GUI in REALbasic for Linux. I
can shell out to send & update stuff w/ what I have written so far.
Next comes the nym & pgp stuff. Oh...man...headaches ahead. (G)

That first line looked like it's working, but nothing new in the ~/Mix
dir, and allpingers.txt is till empty. I get this:
$ /home/william/Mix/mixmaster --update-pinger-list
Info: All Pingers File Downloaded OK. william@host:~/Mix$
/home/william/Mix/mixmaster --update-stats=banana Error: Stats source does
not include all required files. Stats source does not include all required
files. william@host:~/Mix$
Maybe re-install and start over?

I found the it reports that even if your not connected and did not
really update.

See if you have permissions set to write to that folder&files.
I installed Mixmaster as user( i.e sara) not as root. So you
may need to change that first.
You can create a stats-src.txt manualy in ~/Mix, then just add
the word banana inside on the first line. From then on you can
just use the - -update-stats w/o the =banana bit.
Check your permissions & let me know how it goes. We can muddle
thru it together. ;)

\\\\\\\\\kicking myself.
bash not only gives me the silent treatment, it lies when I forget
to turn on tor.
Success!
Updates are complete.
On to the next conundrum.

Got stats now; latest posts I could find on google by Stray Cat are dated
2003, so would be an older version of mixmaster. Likely advice is as
irrelevant as
http://linux.derkeiler.com/Newsgrou...05-10/0639.html

Cool! Glad to hear it, kwatq.

Thanks, Sara;
It's actually sending stuff, according to gkrellm. Still keeps lots in the
pool dir. (?)
Note to the clueless, when someone writes "SMTPRELAY
smtp.yourmailservernamehere.com"
It doesn't mean you should type in smtp.yourmailservernamehere.com
It means you should type in the same as the server name you used to set up
your email account. In my case: mail.ISPname.com
The cognoscenti seem to like leaving these traps for the unwary. ;)
