I can't see where relaying comes into it then, unless you have set your server
up to post through your ISP's (or another) SMTP server. Mail from you to
thrasher@reece.net.au should be a direct connection. I have tried a few things
and can't reproduce the error. Does it happen with anyone else, or just me?

He sent directly to you. If he's on a dynamic IP address, it's likely
that your ISP blocks them as they're the main source of spam.

I just tested it again and it worked ok. Probably some glitch.
I did/was connect/ing directly to your server from mine.
Oh well.
