My version of PGP only allows for a 1024bit key. Is this the problem? You also mention that I provided a key with an unsigned userid. What key should be used to sign the key. Should it be Someone PGP2 <somenone@nym.panta-rhei.eu.org> ? Please hang in ther
e with me, I really want to get this working.

What is the version of PGP?
If you have PGP 2.6.3 or greater it will create a 2048 bit key.
PGP 2.6.2 will accept 2048 bits but only create a 2047 bit key.

See the below example.

Ciao!

1] Generate key

PROMPT>pgp -kg
Pretty Good Privacy(tm) 2.6.2 - Public-key encryption for the masses.
(c) 1990-1994 Philip Zimmermann, Phil's Pretty Good Software. 11 Oct 94
Uses the RSAREF(tm) Toolkit, which is copyright RSA Data Security, Inc.
Distributed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Export of this software may be restricted by the U.S. government.
Current time: 2006/04/22 17:44 GMT
Pick your RSA key size:
1) 512 bits- Low commercial grade, fast but less secure
2) 768 bits- High commercial grade, medium speed, good security
3) 1024 bits- "Military" grade, slow, highest security
Choose 1, 2, or 3, or enter desired number of bits: 2048
Generating an RSA key with a 2048-bit modulus.

You need a user ID for your public key. The desired form for this
user ID is your name, followed by your E-mail address enclosed in
<angle brackets>, if you have an E-mail address.
For example: John Q. Smith <12345.6789@compuserve.com>
Enter a user ID for your public key:
bogus PGP2 <bogus@example.com>

You need a pass phrase to protect your RSA secret key.
Your pass phrase can be any sentence or phrase and may have many
words, spaces, punctuation, or any other printable characters.

Enter pass phrase:
Enter same pass phrase again:
Note that key generation is a lengthy process.

We need to generate 1759 random bits. This is done by measuring the
time intervals between your keystrokes. Please enter some random text
on your keyboard until you hear the beep:
0 * -Enough, thank you.
.....................**** ............................****
Key generation completed.

2] Create self signature:

PROMPT>pgp -ks bogus -u bogus
Pretty Good Privacy(tm) 2.6.2 - Public-key encryption for the masses.
(c) 1990-1994 Philip Zimmermann, Phil's Pretty Good Software. 11 Oct 94

Current time: 2006/04/22 17:47 GMT

Looking for key for user 'bogus':

Key for user ID: bogus PGP2 <bogus@example.com>
2047-bit key, Key ID 04D00EE9, created 2006/04/22
Key fingerprint = C8 9E 58 2C BD 65 1C EE 32 9A FD 34 19 E6 68 F0

READ CAREFULLY: Based on your own direct first-hand knowledge, are
you absolutely certain that you are prepared to solemnly certify that
the above public key actually belongs to the user specified by the
above user ID (y/N)? y

You need a pass phrase to unlock your RSA secret key.
Key for user ID "bogus PGP2 <bogus@example.com>"

Enter pass phrase: Pass phrase is good. Just a moment....
Key signature certificate added.

PROMPT>pgp -kvv bogus

3] Export public key to file:
