Does "nym.alias.net" recognize the newer DH/DSS key, or just the
older RSA KEY?

Only RSA version '3'. You might even have trouble with GnuPG 1.4.3 with
all settings there are. You will at least need the IDEA plugin for that
to work.

Official PGP has 'legacy' keys. You can use PGP 2.6.3i to generate your
n.a.n. nym key (pgp -kg/pgp -kxa .. .. secring.pgp)

I would suggest getting out a copy of pgp2 and create your nym.alias.net
key with that then self-sign it (pgp -s -u {keyid} -r {keyid} ) and
export the public and private keys into an ascii armored file and then
import the resulting keypair into your gnupg keyring
