Speaking of From headers, I added a quick way for someone to be able to
use any 'from' header he wants, no matter what the exit remailer is.

To use this, he needs to use mail2news@newsanon.org as the gateway, and
add a line to the message body, starting in column 1:

x-from: Some Body <somename@somewhere.com>

That will override any from header inserted by the exit remailer.

Here is a sample of the jcl:

Subject: some subject
To: mail2news@newsanon.org
Newsgroups: misc.test,abc.test

x-from: Some Body <somename@somewhere.com>
Rest of the message body.

The x-from... is, of course, removed from the message body before the
message is posted.

This facility is also available if you cannot use a newsgroups header, but
is a bit klunkier. See http://www.eelbash.org/config15.DAT for the
remailer help file, or send a message to remailer@eelbash.org with a
subject of: remailer-help.

Ask here if you have questions.

JCL? Sounds like you worked on IBM mainframes.

This should be an interesting experiment since the x-from and from
headers are different.

I wonder why you chose to use the message body instead of the
headers for this addition.

Here's a test. I don't know why but it is pretty easy to put the 'x-from'
in the message body.

This is sent with dizum as the last remailer.

I like it!

Question: Does it strip any headers? That is, if one were to
send from their regular email account, would information such
as the ISP, news client, or organization be transmitted, or
removed?

And: Would it work if it were included in the headers (which are
easy to set by template), or *only* from the body?

I just noticed that the address comes across as all lower case.

Is there some way to include both upper and lower case?

All headers are stripped except the ones needed to get the message
sent.

At present, it only works with the x-from in the body. I'll change that in
the near future so that it works in the headers as well.

I didn't realize it was sending the 'from' address as lower-case. I'll get
that fixed shortly.

Go for it, YB.

You can now use the X-From: directive as one of the headers as well as
using it in the body of the message.

Example:
X-From: Joe Blow <joeblow@nobody.invalid>

will create a From header of:

Joe Blow <joeblow@nobody.invalid>

no matter what remailer you use for last hop.

You must use, as the only gateway, mail2news@newsanon.org.

My tests indicate it is working but I would be grateful if others tested
it.

One problem with putting the x-from directive in the headers is that the
exit remailer may remove it.

Because of that, it might be better to leave the directive as part of the
message body - starting in column 1.

Tests have been OK when formated this way

put the x-from directive in the header and left the directive as part of
the
message body

Putting it in both places will work, although it's overkill. I think the
one in the body will end up as the 'from' address that gets used.

Thanks for testing it.
