Author Does a decent anonymous IP address method exist for a windows xp simpleton?

I'm not real good with Windows XP but I would like to find freeware to post
news, send mail, and visit web sites without my ip address always pointing
back directly to me via my isp.

I tried something called Tor freeware but it was so horrid to set up on
windows xp that I failed miserably.

Is there any simple to set up freeware that works on windows and which
hides my ip address? When I google, I find so much that I can't separate
the wheat from the chaff.

A one-word answer is fine as you can help me focus on the one or two
freeware ip address obfuscators that actually work on windows and which are
easy to set up (easier than that Tor onion thing anyway).

Please tell me which anonymous ip address freeware you recommend that is
easy to use and set up on windows.

What specifically did you find difficult about setting up Tor? Most of
the time it installs and works fine at its default settings. And if
you obtain it in the Vidalia package it even configures the Firefox
web browser if you have it installed. Beyond that there won't be any
difference between configuring Tor and any other software because it's
really a matter of setting up your clients properly. That will be the
same no matter what proxy you use.

Tor. :-)

It really is the best there is right now. And Vidalia is the easiest
to set up of all of them because it does some of the work for you. If
you get a little more specific about your problems I bet you can sort
them out with a little help.

There really aren't that many. Tor and JAP. JAP is the same thing as
Tor only more limited because it only handles WWW traffic. Tor will do
other things like IRC. Neither one of them will let you send email
though. Tor has the ability, bet it's shut off because of the abuse
potential. You can still read regular email, and of course do Web
Mail.

After that you're probably looking at something like Cotse. It's a
paid service ($5.95/month), but it has the best email on the net and
about as many ways to hide your IP address from Google and Usenet
readers as you can imagine. I believe you also get some web space in
that price, so you can put up a couple pages privately.

http://www.cotse.net

If you must stick with free, then take another look at Tor. Post your
specific errors or problems, or join the OR-Talk mailing list and post
them there.

To join the or-talk mailing list, send an email message to
majordomo@seul.org with no subject and a body of "subscribe or-talk".

If you are not hiding from a government or the Church of Scientology
and if you are just browsing and not wanting to logon to sites, then
you might try a free web-based privacy service such as

I'm not real good with Windows XP but I would like to find freeware to
post
news, send mail, and visit web sites without my ip address always
pointing
back directly to me via my isp.

I tell you what I do and it works for me. Join anonymouse.org as a VIP
member. It only costs about USA$10, you can pay by Pay Pal. By being a
VIP member you get the encrypted version and you can post e-mails
anonymously, surf the Net Anonymouly and post to Usenet Anonymously
once you get used to it. Just use go ogle and you can use the Go ogle
interface to post to Use net too and it looks like you are using Tor
as that is what anonymouse use.

To make a point there are to many problems setting up JBN, Quicksilver
with modern O/S's.

I have a cot se account, and anonymous account and use go ogle and I
works fine for me. Each to his own. Keep it simple stupid is the old
saying. This is the days you script kiddies just point and click and
it is the best way.
Do not even worry about the spelling and grammar just do it and the so
called experts do not own the Net it is for everybody newbie and
experti. So if you get flamed by a so call expert tell them to go XXXX
themselves.

I don't know which email client you are using, but Quicksilver can be setup to
route everything over the Tor network.

Get Quicksilver here:

http://quicksilvermail.net/

The latest version is 1.2.7. After installing run the update and it will
download all the nice plugins such as nym crreation, etc. It will also
download and install Mixmaster which Quicksilver uses to send Email
anonymously over the remailer networdk. Creating Nyms is a dedicated
business. Can take a long time and a lot of patience. However a
simple way to send Email using Quicksilver is to use the following
template:

Fcc: outbox
Tor: 127.0.0.1:9050,4a; nowhere.invalid;
Host: panta-rhei.dyndns.org:2525
From: kwiktime <kwiktime@kwiktimemail.net>
From: <out you own nickname here>
Chain: panta,*,*,*; copies=3
To:
Subject:

Just fill in the To and Subject fileds and it will send your Email
anonymously over the remailer network. Note there is no way
for anybody to reply to you with this template, but you could
include a Yahoo or whatever Email address in the body of
the message.

Next get Firefox for Web browsing. Get it here:

www.mozilla.com/firefox/ -

If you are having a bother setting up
Tor, go back to the Tor Website and download Vidalia.

http://www.torproject.org/download.html.en

In that page click on 0.1.2.17 which is likely in blue to show it is a link.
The program is a Windows setup containing Tor, Privoxy and Vidalia and
Torbutton bundle.

I know you only asked about sending Email anonymously, but most folks
also need to browse anonymously. But if all you need is very basic
Email anonymity, just open a throwaway Yahoo account. This might be
enough for you. The options above can be setup to offer the maximum
level of anonymity. This might be over the top for your needs.

If you wish to pursue this further (and only you know what your needs
are) read the Security and Encryption Faq:

https://www.panta-rhei.eu.org/panta...ndEncryptionFaq

and here: http://birdsofafeather.bravehost.com/DrWho

Hope this helps

I downloaded the windows Tor/Vidalia/Privoxy bundle
http://www.torproject.org/download.html.en

I installed the Tor/Vidalia/Privoxy bundle into c:\privacy\tor\
It seems two items were added to my startup items according to ccleaner
c:\privacy\tor\bundle\privoxy\privoxy.exe
c:\privacy\tor\bundle\vidalia\vidalia.exe

I went to Firefox 2.0.0.8 Tools > Options > Security and unchecked

Otherwise, you won't be able to install Torbutton as Firefox will say
Firefox prevented this site from asking you to install software on your
computer

I installed the recommended Torbutton extension & restarted Firefox
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2275

I checked that the green onion and blue P were on in my tray
I checked the Vidalia Control Panel which said "Tor is running"

I tested the setup; it failed:
http://torcheck.xenobite.eu/
It said "Your IP is NOT identified to be a Tor-EXIT."
"So you are NOT using Tor to reach the web!"
And then it gave me my IP address.

Am I close? Why, after following all instructions, did Tor fail me?

For debug, I installed the torbutton extension into windows netscape
9.0.0.1 and when I tested it at http://torcheck.xenobite.eu/ it said
Your IP is identified to be a Tor-EXIT.
So you are using Tor successfully to reach the web!

Why would firefox 2.0.0.8 be stopping Tor from working properly?

A good question, Joan.

Do you see a green "Tor Enabled" at bottom right of the Firefox screen?
This is the Torbutton. This is optional. You can still use Tor by dafault
without the Torbutton.

I was using an earlier version of Firefox and when I saw you mention 2.0.0.
I upgraded mine. I thought maybe it was a bug in the new release. Actually
the latest is 2.0.0.7 and it still works fine for me. Check your network config
Firefox by going > Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Settings:-

You should have Manual Configuration checked.

No Proxy for > localhost, 127.0.0.1

Also (most importantly) go > Tools > Options > Content and uncheck both
Enable Javascript and Enable Java. However, these options will not affect
the Torcheck site as far as anonymity is concerned, but will affect your
anonymity with some other sites.

Other than the above I am at a loss. Obviously the easy answer is to use
Netscape 9.0.0.1.

Thanks Jen. My versions was an old one. I did an automatic update and it chose
2.0.0.7 - I (wrongly) assumed it would have downloaded the latest (2.0.0.8).

THAT WAS THE PROBLEM! I did NOT have anything whatsoever on the bottom of
my Firefox 2.0.0.8 windows until I selected "View > Status Bar".
Only then did I see the onion with an X in it.
When I clicked on the X onion, I was able to enable Tor. Woooohooo!

The only problem now is my machine slowed down tremendously all of a sudden
so I don't know why but maybe it's related to Tor.

Why manual? The Windows XP vidalia/privoxy/tor bundle instructions say to
download TorButton and leave all settings at the default which is to use
privoxy which is automatically set up by the bundle.

Also, how do I enable Tor for my newsreader?

Firefox is on 2.0.0.8 and will soon have 2.0.0.9 released.
Firefox 2.0.0.7 has serious issues with security.

Not that I'm recommending it, but has anyone here ever reviewed or
installed Sympa from erightsoft.com?

http://www.erightsoft.com/sympa.html

SYMPA (Send_Your_Mail_Privately_&_Anonymously)
A multi-function FreeWare to be used ONLY for the following
educational / training purposes:

o Send totally Anonymous E-Mails. (Through Tunnel Proxy)
o Send SMS messages via E-Mail. (Depending on your area phone
service provider)

o Built in web browser for easier and lighter use of PC
resources when a quick surf is needed.
o Check, convert to decimal and resolve IPv4 to addresses or
vice versa.

better selection among
hundreds of proxies.
The PROXY web site will even open automatically in case the SYMPA's

The above configuration is for firefox without the tor button
running through privoxy (8118). If you are satisfied with
your security without privoxy, there is no need to change the
configuration.

Actually, I don't even know if the above config would work
with the tor button. And you don't really need privoxy,
so just stick with what works.
