Some posters claim privoxy is unsafe to use these days as it hasn't been
updated for over a year. I never bothered to check out these rumors.

It's not that Privoxy isn't itself safe per say, as much as it is the
fact that Privoxy was never meant to be an anonymity tool and because of
that it need special attention that apparently wasn't paid in full.

It's also a matter of it not being necessary in the first place for many
users, which makes it nothing but a potential liability even if it is
configured properly. And by "properly" I'd almost have to say turning off
all of it's actions and filters entirely, and using it as a transparent
proxy with SOCKS support behind a browser where all the active crap was
also completely disabled, "at the source" so to say.

Sort of what Polipo is, except without the cache. Which I don't
personally trust all that much either. An evil site might be able to out
you by simply replacing certain bits of content and then watching whats
loaded from the site and what's not if you happen to revisit the site
naked, even with a different browser.
