A Mail2News-Gateway makes possible to use the publication ofgroups of news articles in the Usenet over E-Mail without a newsreader program special for it. The interface, gateway, receives the E-Mail, adapts this on the Usenet format and leads then the art
icle in Usenet. At the most frequent one these gateways come in connection with Remailer to the anonymous post (publish) from articles of group of news to the employment. This possibility can be also used, if one does not have an entrance to a "good " new
s server.

Mail2News-Gateways anonymizate even no news articles, but publish them almost invariably including the received From: Address (indication of sender in the E-Mail). In addition the operators of mail2news@anon.lcs.mit.edu point out expressly that each artic
le, which is led over their M2N-Gateway - in addition, futile attempts - is logged. They should assume that that minutes (log file) contain sufficient information, in order to out-get, by whom the article were sent, even if this is not to be seen in the U
senet article.

In connection with Remailer naturally the original author of the enamel is to be determined not by the log file, but only the Remailer, which sent the E-Mail to the M2N-Gateway.

Similarly as anonymous Remailer, also the Mail2News-Dienste is free of charge offered. An obligation of the operators for the continuous enterprise of their services does not exist. Therefore each existing M2N-Gateway without preceding notification can st
op the work.

abuse [work on]The fortbestand of M2N-Gateways is questioned, if they are generally abused to illegal or impact exciting publications.

The following points apply explicitly to mail2news@anon.lcs.mit.edu, exact information about other M2N-Gateways are from the servers themselves to be referred.

Over Mail2News-Gateways material may be only spread, if with the laws of the country is compatible, in which the respective server is. In addition in the USA the laws of the Federal State concerned apply.
Falsifying of articles is forbidden.
Articles, which impair the enterprise of the gateway and other services of the operator, are inadmissible (accordingly also dispatching several hundred articles over the same M2N-Gateway on one day) by their size.

[work on] inquiries and examples Not all M2N-Gateways achieves the same number of groups of news. One can inform however in advance about it, which groups of news of a certain server, or also the availability of a certain group of news are served, b.z.w.
a number of special newsgroup to determine. The proceeding for different servers can vary, therefore in any case the assistance text of the service used in each case should be read.

With the M2N-Gateway "m2n@anon.lcs.mit.edu" is following possible for inquiry:

Assistance text
E-Mail at mail2news@anon.lcs.mit.edu with the reference: Help

Would list all available groups of news:
E-Mail at mail2news@anon.lcs.mit.edu with the reference: cunning note: This complete list is larger than 200KB and contains more than 10,000 groups! That can be for some E-Mail programs simply too much.

Examples from the assistance to mail2news@anon.lcs.mit.edu

Subject: cunning comp\.unix
lists all available groups, whose name begins with "comp.unix".

Subject: cunning *linux
lists all available groups, whose name contains the character sequence "linux".

Subject: cunning alt.*(security|privacy)
lists groups, which begin with "old" and which character sequences contain "security" or "privacy".

Subject: cunning *\.test$
lists all available groups, which end on "test".

[work on] additional headline (header information) If newsPostings is not transferred anonymizated at M2N-Gateways, the header information of the E-Mail is used also for the news article. Reference is taken over, exactly the same the From: Line (sender E
-Mail) and if necessary further headers. The M2N-Server expects "newsgroupa:"-header in each message. If it is missing, the message is rejected and sent back to the transmitter ("gebounct"). It is thus necessary to build such a header into the E-Mail (it
must always "newsgroup:", thus the Plural of the word for the header to be used). Some E-Mail programs do not make it possible to indicate additional headers in enamels others can that. Under Windows the Freeware program " PegasusMail "makesthe use of add
itional headers quite simple for example.

Anonymous Usenet contributions are conveyed naturally not by the original sender, but by a Remailer to the M2N-Dienst. Different Remailer deals differently with the received header information.

Mixmaster Remailer always permit the use of user-defined headers, thus also from "newsgroup:". Mix master is simple in connection with a program such as QuickSilver or Jack B. Nymble (JBN) to use.

Cypherpunk Remailer, which permit an inserting of user-defined headers, are marked in the published Remailerlisten by the characteristic "hash". The programs mentioned furnish a Arbeitserleicherung also here.

Around by Cypherpunk, is sufficient Remailern and M2N-Gateways anonymous to posts in the principle however a simple E-Mail program (the use from PGP or GnuPG to the coding of the messages is recommended however urgently!).

[work on] practice
newsgroup headers or address [work on]A Usenet article, that over E-Mail is dispatched and the address of the authentic transmitter to the From: and Reply tons: Lines contained is, to a M2N-Gateway one addresses.

If one possesses a E-Mail program, which permits an adding of own headers, one inserts a "Newsgroups:" header. If one answers to a Usenet article, then one should add also the "References:" header. In this "References" header the Message ID's of the previ
ous articles is to be indicated to the topic. One should indicate all Message IDs, but at least the Message ID of the article, to which one refers. This header is needed by the news servers, in order to assign the article to the correct discussion tree (t
he Thread in such a wayspecified).

Examples:
Ton: m2n@beispiel.com
Subject: RH: M2N-Test
Newsgroup: de.test
References: < 739023783a4@beispiel.com >
(also at only one group it is called "newsgroup:", also with only one reference is "References:" to indicate.)

Several groups, are separated by commas, without blanks:
Ton: m2n@beispiel.com
Subject: RH: M2N-Test
Newsgroup: de.test, old test, misc.test
References: < 739023783a4@beispiel.com >

admission of additional headers is not possible in the E-Mail program [work on]Also, if one cannot build additional headers into the own E-Mail program, news contributions over M2N-Server can be published. In addition the addressed groups can be built i
nto the E-Mail address, if by the M2N-Dienst one supports. But the indication is not supported here by "References".

In the case of the M2N-Gateway "m2n@anon.lcs.mit.edu":

mail2news-YYYYMMDD-[gruppe]@anon.lcs.mit.edu

whereby YYYY is the current year, mm the month and dd the current day.

A Posting after DE.TEST would go thus to the following address:

mail2news-20040407-de.test@anon.lcs.mit.edu

Several groups can separate you with "+". Over for example after OLD TEST and MISC.TEST to posts, you send the Mail on:

mail2news-20030407-de.test+at.test@anon.lcs.mit.edu

unwanted Werbemail [work on]Unfortunately it nearly always brings the use to an authentic, answerable E-Mail address in news-artikeln with itself that the sender is covered up sooner or later with Werbemails(Spam). Different counter measures lead to dif
ferently large success.

Who uses Mail2News-Gateways, can protect itself against unwanted commercials, by he the "NOSPAM" -address of the server uses. Z. B:

mail2news_nospam@anon.lcs.mit.edu

or, if the E-Mail program does not permit user-defined headers:

mail2news_nospam-YYYYMMDD-[gruppe]@anon.lcs.mit.edu

"Spamrobots", which search Usenet for addresses, is then deceived thereby (mostly) that the return address is changed; however in a way, which permits it human readers still to read and use for direct answers to the author the authentic address.

[work on] anonymous post Anonymous articles are transmitted including the additional ("newsgroup" -) headers from a Remailer to the M2N-Gateway. In addition all Mixmaster Remailer or Cypherpunk Remailer is suitable, if they are designated in the Remailer
lists by the characteristic "hash". If a chain is used from Remailern to anonymizating, the latter should support therein the Hash option.

The message body of an anonymous Usenet Postings over Cypherpunk Remailer and M2N-Gateway begins as follows:

Anon ton: m2n@adresse.com

##
Newsgroup: gruppe1, gruppe2, gruppe3
Subject: Reference header of the article
Far header: As required

Text of the article...

frequent problems [work on]Articles, which cannot be gepostet, are sent back to the sender. An error message should explain the problem, although that does not help you, if her by an anonymous Remailer post, thus no alias- or material address to use.

Frequently is missing in rejected articles of the "Newsgroups" headers (see above).

In addition groups of news are often separated in the "Newsgroups" header by blanks from each other, which is likewise inadmissible:

WRONGLY:
Newsgroup: old test, de.test, misc.test

CORRECTLY:
Newsgroup: old test, de.test, misc.test
